Did Sierra Boggess undergo accent training ( or did any American Christines) for RAH/Broadway? Thanks in advance , you’re the best😄
Sierra Boggess is the woman famous for singing...
...in “All I Ask of You”, and her pronunciation in the RAH concert in particular has been much (as in, MUCH, VERY MUCH) discussed in the online world. So I don’t think I have more to add to that.
But it IS true that English-speaking Christines around the world - be it in the US, South Africa or Australia - has been asked to sing in a “britified” way, a sort of pan-British/mid-atlantic style. I remember South African Magdalene Minnaar talked about this in an interview, how hard that was for her because her natural Cape Town accent is way different. I’ve also read early US Christines commenting on the same - alas I can’t remember who. Only in the Restaged US Tour did it seem they opened up for a broader American accent, so the Phantom and Christine sounded American rather than British-ish.
Locally foreign singers also tend to get speech training if they’re to sing in another language. In Denmark they’ve featured several Swedish Christines, and they’ve been giving lessons to master Danish. Same for Americans in Germany. What I’m actually most curious about is Sierra Boggess’s training before the French production! She sounded good, with an accent but still good, in the various videos she’s shared singing in French. :)
