Mandalorian Season Finale Spoilers Below
I’m back at it again because I thought of another way to view Din removing his helmet when parting with Grogu.
So, in my first post, I thought Din removing his helmet was supposed to be a sign of love. It signified all he was willing to give up for Grogu. But that didn’t sit well with me because I saw that as lazy writing.
Then, in a second post, I thought that it was to signify Din beginning a new path, shedding his “flawed” identity so he can be a “real” Mandalorian who can reclaim Mandalore with Bo-Katan as Mand’alor. Needless to say, I also did not like this reasoning either.
And now we’re to this post. Rather than Din giving up his beliefs, his identity, his Creed for Grogu, I think this scene can also signify how giving up Grogu is going against his Creed. So, adoption (Gai bal manda) is a huge part of Mandalorian culture. And while the concept of the foundlings seems a little different, I think it is basically the same. After all, in episode 3, the covert was willing to expose itself to help Din get Grogu back. You even have Paz Vizsla (the Heavy Infantry Mandalorian) and Din exchange “This is the Way,” signifying that apart of their Creed is to look after Foundlings. And, of course, we have the Armorer, in episode 8, telling Din that, by Creed, he is to be as a father to Grogu.
Now, we all know that it is against Din’s Creed to remove his helmet in the presence of others. However, rather than looking at this scene as Din giving up his Creed to say goodbye to Grogu, we can look at this scene as Din knowing that giving up Grogu goes against his Creed. Grogu is his child, his Foundling. By Creed, Din should be as his father. Thus, giving Grogu to Luke, is going against his Creed. And so, Din must remove his helmet. Parting with Grogu means he can’t live by his Creed anymore and removing his helmet signifies this.
Now, of course. The Armorer also said that Din must return Grogu to his own kind. Both she and Din assumed that this meant taking Grogu to another Jedi. In this case, it is no issue that Din give Grogu to Luke, right? Din even makes a comment that Luke is Grogu’s own kind. However, if we view Din removing his helmet as him knowing that giving up Grogu goes against his Creed, then it also suggests that Luke is not Grogu’s kind.
Rather, Din is Grogu’s kind. They are a Clan of Two. Even though Grogu is a Force user, he belongs with Din. to signify that they are of the same kind and belong together, Din removes his helmet to show that them parting is then against his Creed. He can’t wear his helmet because giving Grogu up against his Creed.
