Monday, March 23: Ozzy Osbourne, "My Jekyll Doesn't Hide"

R.I.P. John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne (1948-2025)

Ozzmosis was a strange and difficult record that had a strange and difficult birth, and that the finished product was a murky mess was all the more dispiriting because as a collection of musicians, the record contained one of Ozzy’s best lineups with Zakk Wylde, Geezer Butler and Rick Wakeman all on hand in some capacity.  But there were so many cooks in the kitchen that the group didn’t have a chance to work as a real band, and even though “My Jekyll Doesn’t Hide” was written by Ozzy, Geezer and Zakk it felt constrained by both Michael Beinhorn’s muddy production and the sentiment that the Ozzman needed to fit with the times.  To be sure, Zakk’s riffing had been moving in a sludgier direction anyway and these were clearly Ozzy’s lyrics so Geezer couldn’t be much of an x factor outside of his singularly powerful bass.  And in several moments the track sprang to life, whether through Ozzy’s unwavering love for what he did or the players finally getting to lock in.  But only four years after reestablishing his viability on No More Tears Ozzy was back to basic scary/crazy man antics and it was hard not to escape the feeling that we knew he was capable of much better.
