The day came again.
He should have gotten over it by now, but here he was after telling work that he couldn't come in tonight all because of this day. After so many years, why couldn't he just move on? In a way, he did. But in his opinion, moving on would be to stop moping on this day even if he had every reason to be.
Everything looked the same, yet so different simultaneously as he walked down the very street he remembered running down so many years ago. Now that he was a grown twenty-two year old man, it didn't seem as wide and sparse of a street, but at the time, it had looked completely different.
Any place looked big to a twelve year old but this place was the most striking to him. Leo, as he was now called, walked up to the sidewalk of an intersection. As memories he had suppressed again throughout the year resurfaced, he found himself staring into a spot in the road. It was cleaner than it had been that day but everything was so vivid in his mind that he actually felt a bit nauseous.
Suddenly weak in his knees, Leo slid down with the support of the light post beside him. He was thankful that there weren't many people on the streets to see him in this state. Bringing his knees into him, he rested his elbows onto them with his hands up to his mouth.
He sat there wordlessly, remembering everything that lead to his mother's death, everything that happened while his mother breathed her last breath. He couldn't, however, remember anything after. It all seemed to be a blur and if anyone was yelling at him, Leo didn't hear what they had said.
Like every year, the son would always mutter the same thing as he visited here,
"...I'm sorry, Mom.."
