I haven’t done spider updates in a while so lemme share a couple of my new additions.
P. murinus “OBT” sling showing adult coloration and a very angry C. lividus “cobalt blue”. They are my first two Old World species and they are a fun challenge.
(Also got a b. hamorii “Mexican red knee” sling but they’re too teeny tiny to get a good shot of.)
Tarantula Controversies #1: The OBT as a Beginner T
Tarantula Controversies #1: The OBT as a Beginner T
Recently, I sat down to write an article about some of the divisive, hot-button topics that dog the tarantula hobby and often ensnare uninitiated keepers in heated debates. These are subjects that new hobbyists are often interested in learning about, but an internet search or an innocent forum query produces two equally heated and opposing answers. My hope was to present both sides of these…

Meet Robbie! He's a Pterinochilus murinus, or an Orange Baboon Tarantula. In the hobby, they're more commonly called an Orange Bitey Thing, or OBT for short. Super fast, super aggressive, super nasty bite.
But!
Also absolutely stunning, fuzzy, pro web makers, and pet holes, though you can see Robbie wasn't afraid to show his face. Lucky for me, he was just rehomed a few days ago so I don't have to worry about opening his container for anything other than a quick food drop for quite some time.
He's such a handsome fellow, I'm so glad to have him in my life. For the record, "he" isn't actually sexed yet, but I will never call a living creature an it, so he it is for now.
Robbie's namesake is the one and only Mr. Coltrane, as Hagrid is well-known for his penchant for the more interesting creatures out there.
Robbie is amongst good company :p
Here is another very good example of why beginning T keepers should not keep OBTs (Pterinochilius murinus)-- Speed. It might not be something you think about when picking out Ts, and perhaps you don't have a good grasp on what a fast tarantula actually looks like. Well here you go. Teleportation exists, and OBTs are using it.
P. Murinus, little beauty.
