The week had been long enough for Noa, returning into the swing of things after the holiday break and doing her best not to take it easy on her students. There were pockets of fresh air here and there; the anticipated scheduled appointment at the spa along with the gift she received from her husband at Christmas made her Wednesday go faster than normal. Thursday seemed to drag into Friday morning where a lingering goodbye kiss reminded Noa that she needn’t rush home after work. Eric would be leaving for some thing she really didn’t understand which would leave her time to grade some assignments and spend it with Hunter, uninterrupted on her side of the relationship. With Eric not coming home until Monday evening, it gave her plenty of time to unwind over the weekend and prepare herself for the next week ahead. If she didn’t already plan her own small weekend getaway.
She had left early enough that Sunday to get home to fix herself something to eat for dinner so she could buckle down and grade the short essays she had assigned. Noa still managed to hang onto the giddy sort of feeling she had whenever she left her rendezvous with Hunter. She leaned against the front door, letting out a content sigh, her eyes closing as she took a moment to return herself to the actual reality she’d have to face.
The aroma of roasted chicken met her nostrils a few seconds later, causing her brows to furrow in confusion. She wasn’t going to see Eric until the next day and she certainly hadn’t left anything cooking over the course of the days while she was gone. As she approached the kitchen, soft music joined the scent of dinner and soon, the sight of her husband met her eyes. Noa’s smile softened as she gazed upon Eric for a moment before she crossed the room to wrap her arms around his waist from behind, pressing her lips to his shoulder. “You’re home early.” She moved around him to be face to face with him, raising up slightly to kiss him in proper greeting. “I missed you.”
Every fiber of her being missed Eric while he was gone, whenever he was gone. Her newer arrangement dulled that ache and there were times where she was worried that she was finding it more enticing than the man she had married. Things had changed from the beginning of their relationship to now, as were expected, but with Eric having retired they were focused on family building and that itself was enough stress after a while. On themselves and each other. She pulled back after taking in his scent -- cologne mixed with chlorine -- and let her hands rest on his hips. “I wasn’t expecting you home this early.”
