I pulled out my copy of The Touch of Sunlight last week to read to my seven year old and she loved it so much! She asked to read it again today.

My 5 year old just started playing Duolingo ABC and you will probably be unsurprised to hear that Falstaff (nicknamed "fofo") got into quite a bit of mischief as a cub

I just googled to try and see if there were any images of baby Falstaff and I was NOT DISAPPOINTED.

if this season is a wizard of oz reference, are ted, rebecca, beard and roy ALL dorthy?

I have absolutely NO idea. But I think this pretty much summarizes my thoughts on the matter:

I think there are shades of Dorothy in so many characters this season. Dorothy wants nothing more than to get home to Kansas but she is convinced she needs the Wizard to tell her how to get home. She goes on this journey to Emerald City to find the answer from him, but she actually had the answer all along! Her ruby slippers that she put on at the beginning of the journey and her own memories of Kansas.

She just had to think of home and tap her shoes.

Glinda couldn't tell her because she had to learn it for herself. That was the only way it would work.

You can tell someone to do something--tell them they need to go to therapy or change their life--but they have to figure it out and learn the lesson for themselves.

So many Ted Lasso characters are looking for answers from other people or other coping mechanisms. Eventually they learn they already have the answer or that they are the answer.

I would throw Jaimie into the Dorothy pool as well. Jaimie spent the season asking everyone about their relationship with their fathers, but none of their answers help him. Ultimately he is the only one who can say “my dad is a piece of shit AND I can’t have him in my life,” so he punches him. In that moment, I think he finally has his answer.

Roy had a very similar arc. He had help getting himself back to Richmond as a coach, but ultimately he had to have his own lightbulb moment (Ted to Roy: “Roy, I got zero interest . . . in making you do something that ain't in your heart” followed by Roy’s “I miss all of it . . . This isn't what I'm meant to do” moment at the pundit job.)

I do think that Rebecca is the true Dorothy of the season meaning her journey is a) spanning the whole season and b) hitting most of the Oz beats (red soled shoes; her three suitors as the lion, scarecrow, and tin man, etc--even if these are reaching, the theme still holds for her.)

Rebecca’s looking for answers from anyone other than herself. She's received advice from Sassy, Keeley, Roy, Higgins, etc and none of the advice works for her. We also had Rebecca calling Ted asking for a pep talk and even Ted/the Wizard can't help her with this one. It’s all Rebecca. She’s always had the power, but she doesn't know it. Rebecca lost her ability to trust herself because of her abusive marriage and it's something she needs to work to regain (self-healing . . . with the help of a therapist 😅). Basically, she needs to figure out what SHE wants.

(I'm also ready for her to throw water at the Wicked Witch (Rupert) and let her (him) melt.)

I really, really want Ted to be a Dorothy as well because I want that man to figure out what he really wants and for him to figure out what home means to him so we can have him truly thriving back in Richmond next season. And I do hope we get some of that (because I think multiple characters can serve multiple purposes).

But I do acknowledge he is more Wizard than Dorothy. Everything about Ted this season is a very clear metaphor for the man behind the curtain, “he’s just a man,” etc. He's not magic, he can't solve everything, he's just trying his best and the pressure to live up to a certain image of Ted Lasso TM is starting to catch up with him. As Sharon put it, “The truth will set you free."

I personally think he will choose to pull back the curtain in order to be honest with the public (maybe in a story written by Trent Crimm) where we get a conversation about his mental health. Like, it's enough for Ted to acknowledge it to himself, but I think we'll get a public version of this.

(Also, not to get too dark, but the Wizard straight up leaves Dorothy when his hot air balloon takes off for Kansas, so . . . I might still get my dream of Ted going back to Kansas at the end of this season and it being very emotional for Ted/Rebecca.)

Anyway, this got unnecessarily long but I had a lot of thoughts. Thanks for indulging me!

*Oops, I forgot about Beard! I think Beard is Toto 🤣 But I could see shades of Dorothy in him as well! Dude wants to be okay and find his happy place and I want that for him as well ❤️

how'd that butternut squash mac and cheese w/bacon turn out? and could I possibly get that recipe? it sounds awesome

It turned out delicious, and with plenty of leftovers that were also delicious on reheat! 

Though to be honest I am a huge butternut squash fan---I usually get one or two when I go to the grocery store and turn them into puree, which I then use to make Butternut Squash Bread (like banana bread, but it tastes like Fall!) and an unhealthy share of Creamy Butternut Squash Pasta.

(This is how I make butternut squash puree, fyi.)

The recipe I used for the mac and cheese specifically is from Damn Delicious, and I’ll throw in this recipe for a Butternut Squash Tart, which I made for an office Thanksgiving party two years ago and got rave reviews from the Head Lawyer herself.

first books to make me cry. i read my favorites over and over again

the animorphs series went so raw that i was quietly devastated by multiple books in the series and the only reason i stopped reading them as i got older was because the tiny local bookstore stopped carrying each new one in sequence and would just randomly have out of order newer stuff in stock

I'm absolutely with you- the dynamics CAN be interesting, but hard no on the smut. There was a rather interesting fic by esama I think for FF7 that delved into the psychological impact of madscience turning the main character from an omega to an ultimate alpha and stuff. It was interesting

I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about. Ultima, right? God, I was OBSESSED with that fic. It was (funnily enough) the first ABO fic I read, so I was under the impression they were all like that? And I was like cool, this is a really interesting concept, imma look for more of this (spoiler alert-- I did not find it).

Instead I found stuff about knots and self-lubricating orifices and going into heat, which was an...eye opening experience for me.
