Kara’s days had been falling into somewhat of a routine, well, it was only her third day with Lena but so far she seemed to have everything down. Even though she still didn’t like getting up in the morning, she was better at it now, and even though she had figured out the shower, she’d still asked Lena if she could come dry her hair the past two mornings.
She still didn’t understand the need for jackets, but once Lena had showed her that she could fit her tiger friend in the pockets, well at least his back half, that’s when Kara was all for them. She’d been plopped down on the couch in Lena’s office all morning, her little bowl of candy from home next to her, fancy phone on her lap as she looked through the animal app Lena had put on it for her. She still couldn’t read most of the names, but she liked looking at the pictures, so that was something.
Glancing up for probably the first time in an hour as there was a knock and soon the door opened Kara instantly perked up once Jess leaned in, giving her an eager wave, her smile only grew as Jess actually waved back at her, albeit not as excited as Kara had, but the gesture was still there.
“Miss Luthor, those investors from the bank are here. Along with Mr. Timmons. Judging by the look on his face, he’s still not too thrilled about his building being bought out. I told them they could schedule to see you later in the week, but they are being insistent they speak with you now.”
Looking between Jess and Lena Kara was starting to catch on that these people that were coming for a visit weren’t fun people, reaching for another one of her candies she perked up once she was addressed, wanting to pout at the thought of having to leave for a bit, but since she figured Lena had decided to talk to the not fun people she nodded as she carefully climbed off the couch, holding the phone carefully and grabbing her candy bowl.
“Um Kara just come sit right here for a moment okay?”
Looking up at Jess she absently nodded as she moved to sit down where she’d been directed once they had moved into the hallway and over to where Jess’ desk was located. Curiously looking around it was only a few brief seconds later that Kara heard footsteps and then Lena’s voice as she looked over her shoulder, peering through the tiny window only to huff a little once the doors to Lena’s office closed again.
It didn’t take a lot of time for Kara to realize she was sitting where she was, because she wouldn’t be seen there, but once the doors had closed again and it was just her and Jess she glanced up once Jess appeared in front of her once more.
“Sorry, these guys are a headache enough on their own. But, I’ve already got a chair for you if you wanted to come see what I get to do all day? Since I’m sure Lena will start giving you tasks soon,”
“Okay! And don’t worry...I know I’m hard to explain,” she replied with a small shrug, which seemed to ease Jess slightly and Kara figured it was kind of nice that she had worried about not wanting to hurt her feelings, at least that was how she was going to look at it.
Following along Kara plopped down on the chair next to Jess’, making sure to check and see if it was a spinny one before nodding in approval. Setting her stuff down she pushed it aside, before reaching back to pull the candy bowl closer again.
“So first, because these guys are a pain. And, it takes time but you’ll eventually learn which clients and general people are more stressful than others. But, when those people are here, I always tend to make sure to set aside two Aspirins for Lena, sometimes they aren’t needed, but other times. When she’s been stuck in her office with these guys for two hours, headaches are a very real thing,” Jess explained, taking the extra second to show Kara where she was getting the bottle from, what it was, and what they looked like. She may not have been informed on everything, but she knew Kara wasn’t your average young adult. And while she didn’t want to ponder the possibilities of if it was a mental thing, or some sort of other thing that had kept her from being out in the world, she figured Kara was sweet enough. And considering the liking Lena had taken to her, enough that they were roommates, especially since she knew enough that Lena wasn’t looking to ever live with someone currently, well she knew it couldn’t be too bad.
“But, that’s only for rare occasions, for the most part. I mostly get to schedule times for people to meet with Lena, or answer the phone, or deal with the people that don’t quite get to speak with her yet. Like the middle man, sorta.”
Attempting to follow along as well as she could Kara nodded slowly. “Um, so...what do people meet with her for? Because she’s...She’s always talking to people, and I know she’s important but why do they just want to see her? Is it because she’s pretty?”
The chuckle shouldn’t have come out as quickly as it did and Jess was quick to clear her throat the moment she noticed Kara’s confused pout. “Not quite. Wouldn’t that be a great job though?”
Nodding eagerly Kara giggled a little as she reached for one of the wrapped candies in the bowl. Giving Jess her full attention, even as she moved from side to side on the chair. Trying to understand what Lena did for a living was more difficult than she had thought it would be, but she tried hard to follow along. But one thing was for sure, Kara definitely did have a new appreciation for Lena, and the people that worked for her once she’d learnt what they all did every day.
Once the phone started ringing and Jess’ computer started dinging constantly with new e-mails Kara had gotten a little overwhelmed. Which she was glad that was when Jess had given her a notepad and a pen to doodle with. She liked the fact the paper had Lena’s name on it and even though she had a million questions about how it got there, it kept her busy as she drew things, and attempted to trace and then write out Lena’s name and L-Corp, which was more frustrating than she’d thought it would be.
She had just finished writing Lena’s name in Kryptonian when she was instantly snapped out of her thoughts by a nudge to her shoulder.
“Did you want to come with me? I was going to make a coffee run,” Jess offered with a soft smile.
“Coffee..can run too? Jeeze, and I thought it was just icky...and tables..But I..” Biting her lip Kara glanced back towards Lena’s office. She wasn’t supposed to go anywhere without telling Lena first and though she wasn’t sure if that applied here too, she didn’t want to risk it, but she also didn’t want to be by herself. “I don’t know if I...I’m allowed” she said quietly. “Just because I can’t tell her first...” she added in, looking down shyly as she fidgeted with the pen in her hand.
Furrowing her brow for a moment, it didn’t take long to connect the dots that Lena didn’t want to risk Kara taking off. Which explained the letting her know bit, and she could understand that. “Hm, well how about we send her a message? She’ll see it and then she’ll know where you are. Would that be okay?”
Perking up a little Kara shrugged, she had no idea but she figured it was better than nothing. “How are we going to do that? Oh! Lena told me I can talk to her on this...Is that how?” she asked, glancing around for a moment to find the phone she’d placed down, which she wasn’t sure how she’d lost but thankfully she’d found it again.
“We could, I’m not sure if she’d see it right now though. I was thinking something like this,” gesturing to her computer screen Jess brought up a small chat window. “So if we type here, we can send it to her and it will pop up on her computer screen.”
Laughing softly Jess nodded as she typed out a quick message. “See,” pointing to the screen and to the ‘taking Kara along for a coffee run’ message she glanced back at Kara before gesturing to the keyboard. “And if you just push that button, it’ll send”
Hesitating for a second and telling herself to be careful Kara lightly pushed the button, watching as the message moved from where Jess had typed it to higher up on the screen.
“See, and that little spot in the corner of our message says it was delivered. Which means it’s on her screen right now.”
Chuckling Jess took a moment to lock up her computer and all the drawers to her desk before standing up. “Do you have everything you need? We won’t be long.”
“I think so!” Glancing down at herself Kara put her phone in one of the pockets on her jacket before putting a handful of candy in the other pocket. Skipping out from behind the desk she grinned only to pause. “Wait...”
Frantically looking around Kara furrowed her brow as she patted her pockets. “Oh no...” leaning down to look under the desk and over to where she was sitting before Kara instantly grew wide eyed.
“Kara, what is it? What’s wrong?” Truly, she was hoping it wasn’t something major. Or something she wouldn’t know how to deal with.
“My tiger! He’s in Lena’s office still! With...with the not fun guys!”
Instantly feeling a wave of relief wash over her Jess gave the panicked looking girl a soft smile. “I’m sure he’s fine, he’s probably keeping Lena company actually. Did you leave him on the couch?”
Nodding a little Kara chewed on the corner of her lip. “H-He was in my pocket all morning, but now he’s gone!”
“Don’t worry, I’m positive he’s still sitting there and he’s probably making Lena smile any time she sees him, so that’s a good thing right?”
“I...yes...But what about, the not fun guys?”
“C’mon, we both know Lena wouldn’t let them touch him. She’s gonna look out for him, don’t worry”
Nodding gently Kara took a small deep breath as she glanced back towards the office before turning back towards the elevator once she had relaxed a little.
It was definitely more stressful being outside and knowing she didn’t have a hand to hold, but she tried her best and she did take a small step closer to Jess once they were on the busy sidewalk, but thankfully they didn’t even go more than a block away. Curiously looking around Kara fidgeted with the candy wrapper in her hands.
“Kara, what do you want?”
“I...what?” looking up at the boards with photos and too many words on them Kara bit her lip. “I don’t...I...” she could easily feel herself getting overwhelmed as she noticed the people around them were definitely growing more and more annoyed as the seconds passed. But the gentle hand against her arm managed to calm her slightly as she focused on the touch and not on the sounds and people around them.
“Don’t worry, I’ll pick something. It’s okay,”
Nodding gently Kara crinkled her forehead as she stared down at her feet, she was slightly disappointed in herself that she had gone on an outing with someone other than Lena, and couldn’t even handle that. But soon she had a brightly coloured juice in her hands and all was forgotten as they made their way back to L-Corp.
By the time they had returned and Kara was setting the candies she wanted to leave for Jess on the woman’s desk while Jess was busy hanging her jacket back up, that was when the double doors opened and the not fun men were saying their goodbyes to Lena before leaving.
Watching them curiously Kara waited until the elevator doors had shut behind them before skipping into Lena’s office, but not before Jess had caught her to hand her the coffee for Lena, along with the aspirin. Reminding her that the coffee was hot before she fully took off.
Delicately setting the two items on Lena’s desk Kara grinned as she pulled her juice out from it’s spot tucked in her arm, taking a long sip out of it before perking up, she’d attempted to stay quiet for as long as she could, but it didn’t last long before she just needed to talk again.
“Did the not fun guys give you a...what was it..headache? But look! I got a juice and the cup even has my name on it!”
