Puck wasn’t exactly sure how other people handled their exes coming back into their life again, but however they did it, he was 100% sure it wasn’t how he was doing it. It’d been years since he last saw Rachel, and in that time, had played out a million and one different scenarios about seeing her again. None of them had come anywhere close to what actually happened. As if his son being an asshole in class wasn’t bad enough, the teacher that called the meeting? None other than Rachel. Imagine his surprise. Shit. Imagine Rachel’s surprise. Because that son? She had no clue about him. Yeah. So, there was that. Once he’d gotten over the initial shock of seeing Rachel Berry in front of him again, it hit him like a ton of bricks - he was still completely crazy about her. And she looked good. The past couple of years had treated her well. Really well. It took almost everything in him to stop himself from bending her over the desk and fucking her, right then and there, when he saw how good her ass and legs looked. They’d always been some of her finer...assets, but he’d could definitely see the work she’d put in on ‘em over the years. And he definitely appreciated it. Somebody else feeling the same way about her practically made him see red. He was seeing red all over again as soon as they started talking to each other. It was obvious that Rachel was pissed. He didn’t know why, considering she’d broken up with him. She lost the right to have any opinion on what he did a long time ago. Probably around the same time she walked out the door of their apartment and told him they were done. He hadn’t stopped thinking of her since. She was it for him. Apparently, everyone but her knew that.
That was never more clear than when they talked after Jack’s meeting. Puck had been hoping to clear the air, at least about his son, but those hopes got dashed pretty immediately after both of them started talking. He wasn’t gonna lie - he was fucking hurt about what happened. Seeing the girl he’d always thought he was gonna marry, was planning on marrying, walking out their front door wasn’t exactly for the faint of heart. He’d admit it; he drowned most of those sorrows with a lot of booze and a lot of random women. Wasn’t until one of those girls came back to him with a positive pregnancy test that he was forced to slow down. That one really threw him for a loop. But, as it turned out, he was a pretty good dad. He had all the motivation in the world - his own deadbeat one. All he had to do was the exact opposite of what he did. And now, here he was. A single dad with a 5 year old son. With his ex as his teacher. His ex that he’d completely and thoroughly fucked things up with for the second time. He’d been expecting some hurt feelings between the two of them, but what really threw him for a loop was the anger. He wasn’t ready for that one. Neither was Rachel. Mostly because it was aimed directly at her. Getting told that your ex didn’t care about you and that your relationship was a waste of time kind of did that to a person, he figured. He wished getting pissed at her helped, but he still felt like shit afterwards. He could see her clearly in his head; she was probably making that face that he hated. The face that she always made right before she was about to cry or when her feelings got hurt. It made him feel like shit. There was a point in time when he was the one that helped soothed those feelings over. Now he was the one causing them. Yeah, shit was definitely different now.
Thing was, he’d always had a soft spot for Rachel. A soft spot about a mile fucking wide. Despite everything that had happened, he still found himself lying awake at night, thinking about her. She didn’t want him, that much was clear, but fuck. He still wanted her. So bad. Nothing about seeing Rachel again was going how he wanted. The only thing that was going how he’d planned it were his feelings for her. Sucked to know they weren’t mutual. Sucked to know that as much as he was thinking about her right now, she was probably sleeping like a baby. He loved her. It was as simple, and as complicated, as that. Right now, it was more complicated than anything else. He should’ve been sleeping, but Rachel was all Puck could think about. How he’d hurt her, how he didn’t get to explain the Jack situation, how much he still loved her. All of it was running through his head. He needed to do something. Make things right. As right as they could be. So he guessed it made sense, then, that he found himself throwing on a pair of joggers and a tank-top, and heading out to his truck. He didn’t have Jack that week, so he was free to come and go as he pleased. He knew where she lived. Perks of being a cop. (Not really. He hounded their mutual friends until they broke and finally told him what her address was.) The streets were largely empty and free of traffic. He almost wished it was the opposite; it’d give him more time to actually form a plan about what he was gonna do when he got there. Kissing her didn’t seem quite right. Fucking her didn’t, either. Which was a bummer, to say the least, considering how much he wanted to do both. Before he knew it, he found himself parking in front of her building. Taking a deep breath, he turned his truck off and made his way up to her unit. He was flying totally blind, but he didn’t care. Being a cop, he knew the implications of someone knocking on the door in the middle of the night, but that didn’t stop him. When he heard rustling on the other side of it, he mumbled “it’s me. Open up. We need to talk.”
