Remus Lupin was a good tutor, that was an objective fact. One he couldn’t really wave away with his usual self-deprecating tendencies; one that he, surprisingly, didn’t even feel the need to wave away. Something in him new, deep down, that his ideal path would lead to teaching: it was simply a nice vindication, a source of rarely-felt pride.
Transfiguration was not his best subject by any means. That title belonged to Defense Against the Dark Arts, then perhaps followed by Charms. He was good enough at it, though, and he saw it as a good opportunity to get in some of his own N.E.W.T revisions in, and he was one of a handful tutors in the school who offered to work with it. Which was perhaps why Professor McGonagall sought him out, last minute, specifically to take up a new student asking for help. A different student had decided to dedicate their tutoring session time to some club or another, though, so he was happy to accept the offer for that night.
The fact that the new student was Regulus Black was... a surprise. He had managed to keep his face neutral when McGonagall told him, and managed to keep that neutral expression while he sat in the small corner of the library he’d booked for their first lesson, next to one of the big windows. Usually he’d find an empty classroom, with ample space for spellcasting and practice, but he found the lessons tended to go better if the first one was spent simply chatting, going over what the person wanted to learn, what they were struggling with.
“Hi, Regulus.” Remus smiled at the younger boy when he arrived, as always having to blink away his surprise at just how similar the Slytherin and his older brother looked. Not the way they carried themselves, though, not as much. Remus didn’t quite have that read on him yet. “Dunno if anyone mentioned, kind of last minute, but - I’ll be helping you out with your Transfiguration work.”
