Just a few thoughts on the latest BTS’ “Love Yourself” video
As much as I liked the cinematography of the video (and of course the video it self) the presence of the girls threw everyone off and brought confusion at their sudden appearance, I see why, but after thinking about it for a while and rewatching the video, a few idea came to mind and as early it's to throw out theories just try hearing me out. And sorry for my English, I'm not a native speaker and I wrote this late at night so sorry if I come as confusing, I tried my best to be clear and short as possible in trying to make sense of my thoughts, I may be wrong but I gave it a try anyway.
Video: X/Trans.
First of all, why girls? Maybe for introducing love interest? Probably, but I'm not Big Hit so I don't know if this is their intention but they do seem a good contrast to the boys, introducing other male characters would make it confusing for sure and by being female characters they do look like a different entity. I like them and I’m curious to know more about them (and the plot of the concept).
Second as for now the girls, well not exactly all of them but I will explain this a little bit further, seems to be a parallel of the boy they are paired with, of one of their issues, unresolved or solved that they are.
For Jungkook and Yoongi's they seem to represent the moving forward, a helping hand: Jungkook seems to struggle in is new condition, feels like he wants to get away from the hospital like he doesn't know what to do but then the girls stops him and gives him a hand, becoming probably his new source support, as someone who is in his same position; Yoongi and the guitar girl look close, like they know each other from somewhere (maybe same music theory class?), she is fast to act on Yoongi's habits, stopping him from doing worse.
For Namjoon and Taehyung's they seem to represent their past self, what they were before: as seen in previous MV, Namjoon worked part-time at a gas station as he struggled with money. The girl is in the same situation he was once in, trying her best to go by; Same goes for Taehyung's, previously was showed getting in trouble most of the time and the fact that he tried to help by stopping the girl from stealing and paying for her stuff (I'm curious to know the reason why she attempted to do that, problem in her family or simply out of boredom?) show that he matured during the apparent time skip.
For Jin's I'm not so sure, but for certain seems a spark for something to start, a faithful encounter that will probably help him make a step forward. He opened her lost notebook may symbolize a turning page, a new start, especially because it was shown during the opening act.
And for Jimin and Hoseok's, well, here looks like a love triangle is going on. She looks like a close friend to the both of them, she even bought a cake to supposedly cheer up Hobi, and their scene even introduced a bit how plot/backstory for Hoseok’s character. I’m intrigued but I smell drama.
But everything is yet not so clear and I will wait for more info to come.
And this is it. Just a few thoughts I wrote out while waiting for new info. One thing him certain off, if all of this ends being "love is the cure for everything" trope I'm going to be disappointed, especially if this leads to the end of the HYYH series that was all about internal demons and friendship. And also love doesn't solve everything. This doesn't mean I will hate the concept and don't support the comeback, it just means what I said: I will be disappointed and that's it, nothing less nothing more. I will still love the boys.
