808 State - Initial Granada Report
This is the return of 808 State! The Manchester based group were pioneers of the UK Acid House scene, releasing the genre defining Newbuild and Quadrastate LPs in 1988 and 1989 respectively. They had a huge impact culturally and also commercially, selling tonnes of records both locally an internationally. In 1991 they put on a huge Turbo Rave at Manchester’s GMEX and in the late 1990s, local DJ Herbie Saccani named his Stockport record shop after the Quadrastate LP. Now trimmed down to a line-up of just Graham Massey and Andrew Barker, 808 State return with the Initial Granada Report EP. This EP was recorded in a forgotten studio that used to belong to North West UK TV broadcaster Granada and contained relics from a past era such as floppy discs. It is their first original material since 2002 and embodies both the experimentalism and the original Acid House spirit that made 808 State so exciting in the first place. The EP begins with the ace Ujala, where layers of live percussion underpin bumpy keys, blistering synths and ‘fantastic’ vocals. Tokyo Tokyo features spoken Japanese vocals over an 808 State style acid synth and rattled beats, whilst Planeten has a dark electroid vibe. Bataliga rounds off the EP with explosive percussion and a huge nasty synth line. 808 State. Are. Back!
