Paestan Red-Figure Bell Krater with Kadmos, Founder of Thebes, 400-370 BC
The vase shows Kadmos (Cadmus), founder of Thebes slaying the dragon, whose teeth were planted in the ground. The teeth then grew and became the men of Thebes. The reverse (not shown) is the Thracian bard Thamyris, blinded, and the Muses. Thamyris had boasted that he could win any contest even if competing with the Muses, whereat they blinded him and caused him to forget his skill. These are two very rare subjects.
Paestan vase painting was a style of vase painting associated with Paestum, a Campanian city in Italy founded by Greek colonists. Paestan vase painting is one of five regional styles of South Italian red-figure vase painting.
