some facts on it being okay

as a canadian citizen, i can only offer what i have: comfort and thoughts to share. fortunately, i realized something as i was looking at the post-election results, after getting the tears out of my eyes and the adrenaline out of my blood. i realized more as i did my research about the us government.

the gop has unilateral control of the house and senate. that much is true. but it is also a party divided, one that’s felt consistent, deep regret about letting trump be their figurehead. because that’s what he is: a figurehead. some of you are already saying mike pence is the true danger here.

in 2011/2012, canada voted for a conservative majority that won just 48% of the popular vote. their elect was stephen harper, who had a total of three terms. three! once, i compared him to bush, but now, knowing what mike pence is like, i can compare him to pence.

either way, what you’re dealing with is a conservative majority, where the democrats are going to pull out all the stops they have to deal with a great threat. the difference is that the us has more failsafes.

here in canada, the federal government wields enormous power, and power at the provincial level wanes at their say-so. and there is no delineation between prime minister and parliament; a majority is a majority, plain and simple.

those years were difficult, and our rights were eroded piecemeal. we lost a lot of progress to 9+ years of harper. but we’re still alive, and you will be, too.

let’s say trump wants to build a wall between the US and mexico, making mexico’s own president pay for it. the GOP, the party with the majority, won’t stand for that, even if trump will. that would be a diplomatic and economical disaster.

trump claims to be the face of chance; the GOP is the same as ever, and does not change as quickly as american sentiment does. perhaps it’s a bit more alt-right, a bit more libertarian and jingoistic, but it is not wholly so, and that majority trump controls controls him.

the democrats can filibuster, if they have to. or, without 60 votes in the senate, a single republican crossing the floor can put a serious crimp in trump’s style (or even pence’s, or the rest of the gop’s -- though the last would truly be crossing the floor).

i see a future of falling popularity, a disorganized gop that bands against its own president or, failing that, does less than half of what trump says it will do. trump is not in power. your government has checks and balances and that doesn’t completely go away because the red bar crossed the middle line.

you will lose some things, but you can’t lose everything. trump wants to defund planned parenthood? maybe the gop does too. but less than half of their funding is from the government, and a rise in donations could put them back on track, maybe set back a bit. they’re not going away. some doors may close, but pph will live on.

and vote in your midterms. canada’s “special ballots” are so precious and so few that i sometimes forget we have some voting at the local level. but for the us it is a major part of how things work. we only have by-elections when absolutely necessary; you have them in two years as a chance to smarten the president the fuck up.

a republican senator in colorado, mike hoffman, has promised to stand up to trump. he’s said he doesn’t trust trump. the GOP might be your enemies, but they’re willing to stand up to a greater evil -- and hopefully pence’s more destructive tendencies, too.

be careful, be safe, and be knowledgeable. but don’t lose hope, and just remember: no president gets to do everything they say they do, or will do what they say they do. trump ran on a campaign of fighting the elite and fighting for change, but his party says otherwise, and his position in society betrays him. he’s flip-flopped on so many issues that the only thing i’m sure of is that he’s full of shit.

and so trump, i think, will be no exception to the rules.

Kirito is that one guy who plays pokemon competitively and writes Smogon reviews. Every time a new pokemon game comes out he is pulling hairs trying to figure out the new meta. “my mewtwo is fucking useless now asuna”, he explains. “kirito it’s 4AM can you please come back to bed”

Agil and Klein are genwunners who cannot believe that there are like, over 1000 Pokémon in 2025. “Kids did you know that back on my day we only had 150 Pokémon?”, they say, rocking on their chair. “and we were grateful for it kids we were grateful”

Asuna and Sinon never managed to finish a Pokemon game. Sinon likes the cool final evolution designs but she can never get behind the silly plotlines. All Asuna ever did was catch a Butterfree and name it “Lowfat” on Kirito’s file

Suguha only picks Pokémon she finds cute for her team. She names hers after people she cares about and her Honedge is named “Brother”

Lisbeth names hers stuff like “Dongermeister69″ and “egg”. Her team is a mix of Cutesy Pink Pokemon and Giant Beasts of Destruction. She loves every single one of them and will passionately defend her Tropius, humbly named “ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ﾉ” from any of Kirito’s shittalking abouts its stats

Silica is pretty casual about most games EXCEPT Pokémon. She is a goddamn beast when it comes to that. Fully shiny, 6 perfect EVs team, pokedex completed in every game she ever played, over 1000 hours logged in any of the titles. She’ll play pokemon while logged in ALO, she doesn’t give a fuck. she has a Salamance named Pina who she says it’s her baby. Kirito runs a cold sweat every time she brings a DS to one of the gang’s meetings

2. Favorite fast food? I don't really eat fast food, but I love those cheap... like... amusement park-tier pretzels you can get at movie theaters and department store food courts. I can bake better pretzels at home if I want but sometimes quality just isn't what your body Wants

3. Do you collect anything? If not, do you wish you collected something? Expensive hardcover art books and PS2-era survival horror games are the two main things I collect, but I always get suckered into buying things just because they're rare or limited run or otherwise out of the ordinary so I have a collection of those sorts of things too I'm slowly starting to collect taxidermy, but I really like wet specimens and they tend to be too heavy for a little twig like me to lug around for hours so I never end up buying them

4. What are your top four fictional situations? Be it in actual fiction or what you want to happen in real life. I can't think of an answer to this. Sorry! :x

5. What’s your most valuable object? Probably my camera. I would be pretty devastated if something happened to it (but any time someone drops it or something I'm like "lmao no it's fine it's practically a brick" instead of "please be more careful")

6. What is the first video game or computer game you ever played? Tekken! But I was so young that I wasn't playing it so much as I was just holding the controller and pressing buttons

7. What did you do online before spending your time on this blue hell? LiveJournal. I don't think I need to elaborate :’)

8. What are you looking forward to this year? I honestly have no idea... I guess I'm looking forward to the Bloodborne artbook being released

9. What’s your favorite thing to do to relax? When I need to calm down or clear my head, I like to take a shower, do my skin routine if I haven't yet, light a candle, and do a clay mask

10. Describe a recent weird dream you had. Last night I have an anxiety dream about trying to get candy out of a complicated machine that is really difficult to describe in a way that makes sense. Each candy had an 11-digit number assigned to it and, to get the candy out, you had to enter the numbers with a combination lock. But you turned the numbers on the lock with a single dial that would change multiple numbers at once, and the dial was busted so that it would turn farther than I wanted it to. I didn't actually end up getting the candy I wanted but I paid for it anyway and was really pleased because it was much cheaper than I expected it to be

11. Have you ever encountered anything otherwordly/paranormal/etc? This is kind of hard to answer because I am a skeptic at heart and though I've experienced things that are completely unexplainable, I don't really believe in the paranormal (it is important to me as a concept, don't get me wrong) and it wouldn't feel right to write those experiences off as such

I’m very, very bad at thinking up questions to ask people, so in lieu of me spending 3 days trying to come up with something I’ve just decided not to include any. I know it said in the rules that I have to write 11 questions and tag 11 people but there’s no structure holding these rules in place. I have no legal or moral obligations to follow them. There is no one who can stop me and no one who can punish me for me disobedience. This is tumblr and I’m an adult.

So I guess I’m supposed to make a big 2015 post, but I always have a hard time doing this sort of thing.

2015 was a year. Good things happened, and bad things happened. Some things happened that I’m glad did, but at the same time, I’m still waiting to gain financial independence and actually start making money off of my writing. At the same time, I’m preparing to launch a webcomic that (with any luck) will get me some attention and maybe some change in my pocket.

2015 was a year where I aged, I think. I had never felt much older, each year, but spending four months with my drunk abusive mother out in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania, taking care of her while being put down and screamed at, aged me. It didn’t really teach me anything, or make me more mature, or anything like that, it just made me feel older. It made the bags under my eyes feel heavier, it made the wrinkles on my forehead and by my eyes more noticeable, and it just made me more tired.

But there were good things, too. Excellent experiences I didn’t expect to have. Steven Universe was a big thing for me this year, because I love it and it’s possibly my favorite show of all time. It means so much to me and, yeah. I just sincerely enjoy it, and I can’t wait for it to return next week.

Hamilton was another thing I wasn’t really expecting to come into my life in a big way, but here we are, with me still listening to it over and over and still researching the real people more than I already had. I was already a big history nerd, and Hamilton definitely exacerbated that whole situation, as my girlfriend can attest.

Finally, to close out the year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Some of my followers may not know this, but I’ve been a massive Star Wars fan since I was like, 8 years old. I read almost every EU novel at the time, I collected a ton of the action figures, I imagined stories I could write in the universe, and the prequel trilogy kind of took that out of me. Not to mention the sort of parade of not so good things that came out after Revenge of the Sith. So, naturally, I was apprehensive and not expecting much when I went to the movie, and when I came out of it I couldn’t contain myself, and have since seen it a second time, and I plan to see it a third. It was excellent.

I made a few new friends in 2015 as well, like my good friend Rajeev Lagah, who means the world to me. I grow closer with my girlfriend, Shea Vorbach, every single day, and I wouldn’t trade her for anything in the world, and I mean that. Every single time we spend hours talking about comic books or making jokes about Hamilton or Hunter x Hunter or expressing excitement about upcoming shows and movies, I think to myself that I want to spend the rest of my life with this woman, and with any luck, she won’t get too tired of me in 2016, heh.

2015 was a year. There were good parts, and bad parts, but it was a year I survived, and I came out of it with some good experiences and new things to enjoy, so I guess in the end it was a pretty good year, when I think about it.

Now, onwards, to 2016. Another year to survive, and another year full of experiences.

I’m actually kind of excited.
