Layers of paint make for interesting paintings, imho. I didn’t do it in this painting, but I usually like an underpainting or at least a mid-tone ground layer, usually in a complementary color. Since I use a lot of blue, I like a nice burnt orange layer underneath. Some layers of Merry Christmas, 48x36, oil on canvas. I’ve been playing with this method of rendering the effect of the colored lights on different surfaces. Laying down the color first, then while it’s still wet I do a color wash over it to blend it in. That way the original color of the light is always next to the canvas so will shine through any layers I put over top when actual light hits the painting.
