Work in focus: PaintUnion: Postcard to Pimlico
On Bank Holiday Monday 5 May 2014 a one-day collaborative event called Passport to Pimlico will be staged in Churchill Gardens Square and Community Hall, Pimlico. The event is inspired by the 1949 Ealing comedy Passport to Pimlico in which residents of Pimlico declare themselves independent from the rest of Great Britain, its laws and governance, freeing themselves from post-war austerity measures. This May Day art event in Pimlico's largest housing estate will offer a similar ideal of freedom through the creation of an independent art state within the community.
In the spirit of Passport to Pimlico, PaintUnion extends an open invitation to send a painted postcard to this independent art state, to be shown at the event on May 5th in the central atrium of the community centre.
If you would like to participate please make work on a postcard and send it to: Lana Locke, Passport to Pimlico, C/o Sue Walsh, Churchill Hall, Churchill Gardens Estate, London SW1V 3AL
If you have any questions please contact us at [email protected]. We will hang the postcards on the morning of May 5th before the event opens at noon, so please post leaving plenty of time for them to arrive. If you prefer to deliver your work by hand please bring it along to PaintUnion at the Griffin Gallery on April 29th or to Churchill Gardens on May 5th before 12 noon. You can either take it home after 6pm on the 5th, or collect it from the next PaintUnion event. There will also be the opportunity to make works on postcards at the event, and to have them stamped with a special event stamp on the day.
See the blog for the full programme of contributors including Tim Brennan undertaking a 24 hour performance, Brian Dawn Chalkley appearing as the May Queen, and Alison Marchant bringing her Portable/Photocopy Archive (the No M11 Link Road Campaign) to the May Day festivities. The event Passport to Pimlico is created by practice-based PhD student Lana Locke through the support of Chelsea, Camberwell and Wimbledon College of Arts' Student Initiative Fund.
Please note if you wish your work to be insured please arrange this for yourself as PaintUnion cannot accept any responsibility for loss or damage to pieces displayed. PaintUnion was established by Liz Elton and Rebecca Byrne to create opportunities for artists to meet and discuss issues around contemporary painting.
