this is suuuuch an interesting pairing to choose because i think they're quite interesting as foils in certain ways, but i also deeply do not understand charles and cannot figure him.

i think you get lando, who feels things so deeply and is an exposed nerve just sparking. and it's in the bad and in the good. he's feeling sorrow deeply and he's feeling joy extravagantly. but there's this incredible transparency to him, that i find deeply inspiring to write because there's so much there to mine. and his willingness to be so deeply and visibly himself gives an incredible amount of fic fodder.

where, for me, charles in the opposite. he's got such deep tragedy in his history but everything about his public presentation feels like shallow glossy nothingness. he occasionally has big expressions of feelings but then so quickly he's back to smiling vacantly. i am sure there's a lot that we just don't see because he's choosing to control his public image, but with other people i have such a sense of "realness" slipping through the cracks, and i just never get that with charles. his incredibly staged proposal to alex: was that just a PR photoshoot that they set up to have content for social media, or was that his actual proposal?

there are the ways that lando and charles are opposites - charles is so deeply gifted with languages and speaks so many different languages so well, where lando can barely manage english. they're both business people, but, to me, charles does silly little money ploys (buy my ice cream!) where lando is deeply immersed in building an entire brand.

it's quite funny because i think that fandom tends to portray them both as submissive bottoms but i see them both way more as like dom leaning tops. i looooove all the f/f charlando and it's actually easier for me to imagine when they're women because i feel like as dudes they're both just so obsessed with their own cocks. so i kind of feel like you have to add oscar so there's someone for them to fuck.

tl;dr it makes no damn sense. compels me though.

so, for me, i would actually say the biggest appeal of that pairing was the fannish take that people had on it. when i was first getting into the fandom, i thought that super shame-riddled george was such a hot way to explore sexy shame, and it felt really unique and fresh to me. it wasn't a dynamic i'd read in other fandoms before. (where as, say, the stereotypical landoscar dynamic is cookie cutter and i've read it a million times with a million different ships)

when i think of them as a pairing just in terms of the canon of it all, obviously they have an incredible history and i think that you have so much that you can explore in terms of being young, dumb and giving each other throat infections by sharing a bed. but i think it's got to the point where their deep connection with their partners has an impact on their characterization. and by that i mean, like, say with alex. the fact that he's engaged to lily, who is also a professional athlete, shapes so much of his life. the fact that he choose to make his home with her instead of in a physical place and then is constantly travelling, because if they don't need to be somewhere for his sport, they need to be somewhere else for hers. and the fact that he's actively there being a self-proclaimed HAB, like, god, i like that so much about him. a big statement, but i think he's more supportive of his partner than any other guy in f1. but ultimately for both of them, the fact that they're relationship guys who are in extremely long term committed relationships.

obviously you can do a no wives/no girlfriends AU and make one of both of them single, but the fact of them being such committed relationship guys means that i feel like all galex stories ultimately end with them as married husbands. objectively, i think that probably is a huge appeal for some people, but subjectively it makes the pairing a bit one note for me. like i wrote the one story, which was more an homage to how much i love the fannish exploration of the pairing, but it doesn't tend to be one that i get new plot bunnies for because the end is already known. they commit to each other. deeply.
