Hey glass! Saw phantom in Melbourne tonight and thought I'd give a little update/review about it. Josh (piterman) and Amy were back but Joshua (robson) was still on as raoul, as well as a fairly skeleton ensemble! I wonder where Joshua's outfit is from?
He did amazing as Raoul! He definitely played a more arrogant/head empty raoul as opposed to Blake's very naive but puppy dog style, but his booming ex-phantom voice served it well. I also felt he held himself and flicked his coat in a very phantom-esque way throughout. He stumbled on a few spoken lines but sang marvellously. Despite his more outgoing raoul he still did the very soft waist touch blake usually does before the kiss, which is sweet.
During masquerade, him and Amy were completely off the stage for most of the number (assumedly because he doesn't know the choreo) and just came on and off to deliver their lines. Everyone else was subtly shifted around to fill the gap. It's a shame because it means you barely see their costumes, but it was a good fix I think.
Hilariously, amy usually does a very small slap to blake, but when she delivered her small slap to joshua he spun back like he'd been punched lol.
He also was audibly choking and struggling the whole time in final lair, very visceral. I liked his raoul a lot!
Anyway, hope that was interesting! Many of the cast seems to be down with the virus currently so we'll see how things progress.
Cool, thanks for the review! (Also, nice Viktor avatar.)
I was quite curious to hear how Joshua Robson would do as Raoul considering that his previous experience was in a completely different production (Sydney Harbour) as a completely different character (the Phantom), but it sounds like he did pretty well all things considered, doing a bit of his own take but also taking inspiration from the principal, and it's interesting how they worked around parts that he probably couldn't learn in only a few hours, like the dancing. Would definitely have loved to have seen his totally exaggerated reaction to Amy Manford's very small slap ha ha, it makes the scene sound almost like a slapstick comedy.
I've heard that 14 (!) members of the cast are out either because they're sick or were exposed, so big oof, and I hope they feel better or don't get sick, but it's made for some absolutely wild cast combinations. Thank you again for the review!
Just want to say I've been following discord whooves, lovestruck, zerum — all of it from day 1. I never once turned off post notifications and I can't describe the excitement when I realised the story would be finished and not abandoned. It's been strange to stick with something so long but it's become oddly meaningful to me as a result. Early on it's what encouraged me to keep drawing and pursue art. So I just wanna say even if you don't have the numbers reading you might have 8 years ago, your work and storytelling still means a lot to many :)
I’m glad! I don’t know if I’ll ever see numbers as big as Lovestruck and Discord Whooves’ following again, it’s just kind of the sad part of being in a fandom, fandoms always fade.
As much as I really hope My Magic Grandpa can get popular, I have a lot of doubts at this point. Had I released it earlier it might have had more of a chance, but I didn’t have the ideas back then and I went through a long bout of depression that made a lot of people think the blogs were abandoned.
Still, I’m advertising MMG where I can and I have a nice little following for now, I guess we’ll just have to see how it all turns out
I’m really proud that Discord Whooves has inspired a lot of people though, even if I’m hoping it won’t be one of my only ‘claims to fame’ as it were. Same goes for any of my pony projects, really.
Ryder for me, what an angel. Would he ever wear glasses? They'd pair so well with the sweater vest and his teacher aesthetic. He seems intimidating but then you get to know him and he's this teddy bear of kindness and soothingness and I can't get enough
He has reading glasses, actually! :D
Ah and I’m really glad that slight intimidating facet of him came through! Especially when he first showed up, I wanted him to have this subtle trickster-y mentor aspect to him – like despite his kindness, he’s not afraid to make you a little uncomfortable to teach you a lesson!
My family bought me tales of Zestiria and I know nothing about it but I'm so excited to play! Mostly because of all your amazing art! I ship people already and I don't even know who they are lol
Awesome!!! hahahahaHope you enjoy it! ^______^
I don't know if this blog is still active, but I saw Kooza today in Australia and adored it and the Trickster! After scrolling through your posts, I can't find anything about your backstage experience and I'm dying to know! Any info on this?
This is so sweet! I’ve been extremely busy the past… erm, year?… So I don’t really touch this blog much anymore, sadly. But I’m happy to see so many people getting joy out of the posts that are still floating around :).
I never really posted about it, did I? Lol, whoops. I’ll try my best to do an abbreviated version…
Well, Stephan (the original Innocent) took me backstage and showed me around all the different areas, it was super cool. I got to see the costumes up close (WOW, holy crud, the detail! My favorite costume by far was the Trickster’s Crooner/Skull outfit) and I got to hug Joey (who was playing the Trickster at the time, he still in costume and sweaty af, but was so sweet nevertheless!). The tour was relatively low-key since everyone was very tired/getting ready to leave to go home. Stephan showed all the different parts - wardrobe department, just behind the stage where they make the entrance, the entrances to the trapdoors underneath the stage, where all the props are kept, the monitors of stage on a closed circuit to help them with their cues, and the warm-up/waiting areas. He even took us to this separate tent/room where there was just a TON of hardware and equipment for the tech crew.
It really made you appreciate just how much hard work it takes to put on these shows.
If you have any requests or would like to help contribute to the blog since it’s pretty much inactive right now, I’d be very interested in adding on some admins to continue making posts. That goes for anyone who’s reading this. :)
Thanks for the Kooza love!! <3
