it's not often that paul feels for other people . he isn't heartless but he is a firm believer that you should suck it up and do things even if they aren't entirely pleasant . it was how he had to live his life - why should there be exceptions ? perhaps he was too cynical . but something about her expression gave him pause . he didn't want to care about her - but it was hard with someone seemingly so . . . frail . and yet - this was the girl who ran with vampires . perhaps he judged too freely . ' hey - it'll be okay . the rest of the guys aren't scary . ' he promises , nudging her with his arm . weird , he barely touched people if he could help it . maybe i'm losing my mind . ' if you want I'll growl at them if you want . remind them to be nice . '

scott had done it. he had won bella's favorite summer reading contest. it was a library thing, and scott had only participated because of her. and now— well, scott's beaming as he throws an arm over bella's shoulders, obviously very pleased, but less so about the contest; there's something more important to think about than that. "so, my prize..." scott starts, smirking down at her with a mischievous glint in his warm brown eyes. he definitely hadn't forgotten their little bet and he was eager to cash in. he likes her. was it showing? "i was thinking dinner, but... that's a little too stuffy for us, i think. what do you say about a hike? or, well, it's not really a hike... it's... it's more of a long walk on steady, flat ground. it'll be painless, i promise." there aren't enough bandaids in the world for scott to take bella on a real hike. "maybe with a dog or two, if you want...?"

Jasper is about ready to wear a hole in her floor.  It’s warmer in here than outside where the temperature has been dropping, not that he really cares.  Perhaps some part of him still naturally seeks the warmth when things get cold.  His eyes are dangerously dark and not looking at her.  Hands, fingers, entire being twitches in his frustration over his failure.  He’d tracked the red head as far south as he was willing to go.  All the way to the eastern border of California where the land flattened out and dried up to dusty gold.  Not too far from scent markers he could smell even downwind.   They weren’t lucky enough for Victoria to get her head taken off encroaching on someone else’s territory.  Like attracted like she was probably enjoying her time there.  He’d turned tail like a coward under the guise of warning Bella.  As if it was his responsibility.  Like he cared at all about what happened to her.  Alice did.  Edward did too as much as he denied it.  “No.  We don’t like to go that far out of our range.  Just one.”

jed  stopped  in  his  tracks,  frowning  slightly  as  bella  spoke.  he'd  heard  her  .  .  .  but  he  hadn't  thought  anything  of  it.  jed  didn't  do  careful.  he  was  very  much  a  bull  in  a  china  shop,  and  that  was  the  way  he  liked  to  be.  granted,  it  would  probably  be  nice  if  he  relaxed  a  bit  and  thought  before  he  acted?  but  that  probably  wasn't  going  to  happen.  ❝  why  do  i  have  to  be  careful?  ❞  jed  asked,  raising  an  eyebrow,  ❝  whoever  it  is  can  probably  smell  us  coming.  you  know  supernaturals  have  heightened  senses,  right?  ❞

cora's  eyes  narrow  skeptically  at  bella  as  she  speaks.  ❝  that  sounds  an  awful  lot  like  you're  blaming  me.  ❞  she  points  out,  not  wanting  to  necessarily  argue  but  knowing  she  actually  wasn't  at  fault  for  whatever  it  was  that  bella  was  talking  about.  cora  grew  up  as  a  little  sibling,  she  was  an  expert  at  blaming  other  people  for  things  .  .  .  and  that  was  the  whole  vibe  right  now.  ❝  what  makes  you  sure  i  have  anything  to  do  with  this?  ❞

SITTING CROSS-LEGGED ON HER BED, I grinned at her. The music playing from her stereo was soft, and even if the clarity wasn't to my normal standards, that didn't bother me in the slightest. As long as I was with Bella, I would listen to a cacophony of cats shrieking and not bat an eyelid. Sunlight filtered through the trees outside her window, bathing the room in a warm glow.

"So, after last night, is there anyway I can convince you to attend our senior prom next year?" I asked, already knowing I was pushing my luck. While I had had one of the best nights of my existence, I knew it had been a hard sell for her.

"In more realistic proposals, we still haven't made that trip to Seattle." I ran a finger along a pattern on her bedspread, tipping my head to one side as I looked at her. It felt like a lifetime ago we had made those plans. "How do you feel about putting that right sometime soon?"
