Refreshed Browser Must-Have Guide
So upon reading this original guide, I realized times have changed enough that it’s worth refreshing and updating the list, especially given ongoing concerns about privacy, etc, and I've found quite a few broken links in the previous iteration of this.
I like to use Waterfox as my primary browser, but the extensions I suggest for FF Quantum/Waterfox are of the WebExtensions type so that I can take advantage of multiprocess capability (”e10s”) :)
So pick your browser!
Pale Moon
Firefox
Waterfox
And then along with those, these are my suggested extensions to help curate your browsing experience:
NoScript (FF 57+)
NoScript Classic (Link is direct to the .xpi and will work with FF <57, Pale Moon, Waterfox)
XKit Rewritten (BUT OF COURSE!)
Cookie Autodelete (it’s very much like self-destructing cookies and has a really nice whitelisting system)
Cookies Exterminator is another one I’ve been using; it also clears localstorage, which is something other cookie cleaners struggle with while also maintaining e10s support. The prepackaged .xpi is linked in the GitHub.
Download Cleaner Lite (I don’t like Waterfox clogging up my download history, so this is handy - note that an older non-WebExtensions version is available and can be used with Pale Moon)
Switch to Tab No More (Pale Moon - but may no longer be necessary - have not tested; Fire/Waterfox have alternative mechanisms to disable this now)
ProtonVPN will help your privacy out in browsing, but keep in mind the free version does not support P2P.
NordVPN is a paid alternative that often has discounts, but there have been criticisms regarding transparency.
Mullvad VPN is considered the best but I've never used it, so I can't speak to its effectiveness.
As for ad blockers, I don’t really use any because NoScript functions as a good ad-hoc ad blocker, but if you’d rather focus on controlling ads than Javascript, then here are some suggestions:
uBlock Origin (Fire/Waterfox)
AdBlock Latitude (Pale Moon)
Feel free to drop me a PM with any further suggestions!
