Villa di Maser is one of those places you read about in Art history books. It was built by Palladio, frescoed by Veronese, and has been for years the lush backdrop of family drama. What a place! It is both beautiful and strangely alienating. Perhaps it’s the symmetry of it all or the austere vistas that made it feel a bit soulless for me. The gardens lack flowers, it’s weedy, the hedges are in need of care. I guess as a gardener myself I didn’t feel that the current owners care too much. I could be wrong. Maybe they are just focused on the vines and wine they make. I am glad I saw it, don’t get me wrong…it’s grand.

Villa Maser, also known as Villa Barbaro, was commissioned by brothers Daniele and Marcantonio Barbaro and built between 1554 and 1560 by architect Andrea Palladio, who transformed an existing palace into a humanist country residence. The villa is famous for the frescoes by Paolo Veronese and stucco decorations by Alessandro Vittoria. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, it is a prime example of a Renaissance villa, integrating agricultural, intellectual, and artistic purposes.
