Second Draft of "The Story Formerly Known As Section Nine" (an excerpt)
Jack: You son-of-a-bitch, I will kill you for that!
Eric: You can kiss my ass first!
Jack: Childish bastard!
Eric: Errant fucker!
Jack: Jejune douche-bag!
Eric: Want some coffee?
Jack: I thought you’d never ask.
I agreed with my editor that I would do this writing exercise for the next six months. TL;DR: Don't use verbs that describe a character's thoughts, such as "thinks, remembers, knows" and even "loves, hates." The point of the exercise is to "unpack" your verbs: rather than simply declaring what a character thinks, the author shows the reader how the character came to reach that thought. I decided to start with revising the very first story of PZ (the in-progress second draft, by the way). I trolled through the only three-and-some-odd page bit at the beginning. There were none, since using thought verbs was the kind of thing all my English teachers in high school drilled out of me (Thanks?), and the kind of lazy writing my editor wouldn't let me get away with long before he read that article. I had unconsciously avoided thought verbs when I first wrote it, which made no sense to me since it was the thing I started and finished in a day's effort. Thinking nothing of it, I move on with my inane scribbling in the next setting. Hit the wall at the first sentence.
P.S. If it wasn't already clear, I'm trudging forward with the second draft. If an artist, any artist, wants to draw it, I will convert it later, after I've already moved on to the seventh tale, since that seems to be the pace I'm observing. P.P.S. I'm gathering .gifs to use in my updates so they're not boring old text blocks. And I'm much more colorful than I look.
NEW: Palladium Zero: General update
Wonderful news: We have an artist!
In the next month or so, we will be giving "Section Nine" a major overhaul, starting with the fact that it will be in comic book form! At this time, we are not certain how many updates it will take to finish the story, but I will let all of you know when that occurs. We will also make an effort to get the site back up and running with some changes to fit the new format.
The plan right now is to release "Section Nine." After we get a good idea of its reception, we will release subsequent comics and text updates to give you guys some background. The text updates will either be prequel stories or general information, as written from primary sources. We will also keep track of characters on the character page and update the website's blog with the information I post about here.
Get excited, people! Palladium Zero is in motion!!!!!
Quick update (to whom it may concern)
I've been really quiet lately about my writing, mostly because I am making the transition into college life. It has been a while since I have written anything, but I thought that it would be disrespectful of me if I didn't update you guys on what's going on in Writer World. First off, the beginning of PZ is getting a major overhaul. That was part of the reason why the website shut down. It will still be written, for now. Of course, I still imagine what it could look like if PZ were drawn. If anyone else shares that dream and is pretty good with drawing, I would love it if you reached out to me. Payment can be arranged. Secondly, Third Ship. We are working on scripts and multiple show ideas. It is VERY unlikely that we will produce it ourselves. The concept currently involves finishing the scripts for at least the first season of MB Hasbro and Postmen, then selling the scripts and our writing talents for future projects, to ANYONE looking for a cool show idea and has either the money or the willingness to arrange something. Anyone who fits the bill or knows someone who does should message me. Thirdly, as far as other writing projects go, I've hit a wall. I have the ideas, but I need the people. As far as these sides go, I want to dissociate from my editor, since I can't drag him around like a dead body for the rest of my life (sorry Adam :P). Other writers are welcome (I like collaborations on these things, since if it wasn't already apparent, I have close to NO IDEA WHAT I AM DOING.
UPDATE: Palladium Zero "Section 9"
I finished my editor's story on the PZ site! Sometimes, when The Writer sets the schedule for the editor, The Writer can get impatient. And yes, I capitalized that for a reason...
Here's the specific navigation to the story's timeline segment: http://www.palladiumzero.com/index.php?Menu=stories&tb=Section%20Nine&tc=1
The timeline still needs some refinement, but it will soon be a functional tool for navigating between stories. At this time, disregard the Revelations tab if you navigate out, but one shouldn't need to see that if you just click on the link here, as opposed to following the favorite tab you saved for Palladium Zero, as I fruitlessly hope.
As it stands, about half of the story is written in first person, and half in third person. The reason for this is that my editor started writing this, and he royally sucks at writing in third person. I am equally horrible at writing in first person, and my editor demands I write in third person. Slightly hypocritical, but that's what we're working on right now.
So please enjoy, and if you wish, create an account and comment! We love to hear criticism, and we don't just say that just because we're really masochists that cry ourselves to sleep when someone gives us a text-lashing over our stories. If you create an account, you will receive e-mails about updates to stories, so you don't necessarily need to follow me here for updates (but it would be nice, too).
