Today, we made paintings using palette knives, with Sylvia.
Firstly, we used a cardboard cut out thumbnail, and drew a series of small images of the environment around us.
I selected one of myself reflected in small mirror, sitting on a easel.
I began painting then, and I found it quite a challenge.
I started with the speed I had the day before (life painting). This was a mistake, as the painting was too impasto then, too busy. I have learnt that it is important to go slow when using the palette knives.
I also made a mistake with my painting palette; my tones were too similar, noticeable as they began to dry. I have learnt to make sure my palettes going forward have more division in tones colours, so the painting doesn't become flat.
Trying to define facial features with the knife as well was very hard. I look annoyed, but then again, I kind of was (lol).
I finished up feeling very dissatisfied, but have reminded myself that it was my first go and I'll improve with more practice.
Also I want to remember to relax and have fun while painting, I can be too perfect sometimes.
I used a painting bench for the first time too today. I found it quite uncomfortable, especially on my back. Glad I tried it though.
