The Palmer Method
OK, happy pride, and all that (🏳️🌈💖🏳️⚧️). I just need to say that I’m never gonna be the type of person that has a mohawk and a battle jacket or anything like that. I very much look like just a nondescript middle-aged person but what just happened to me today is a good example of how much of a contrarian I am.
I have been hearing about AI being the future of business and about business efficiency for years now, so without really making a conscious choice, the rise of AI has pushed me inexorably towards learning one of the more laborious cursive methods available: the Palmer method.
It’s not as fancy as the Spencerian script that everyone aspires to—that looks so beautifully old-fashioned, and so… beautifully hard to read. What makes the Palmer method difficult is you need to re-learn how to write on a fundamental level in order to write in this method.
This has been the story of my life. When everybody is going in one direction, I want to know what they’re moving away from. Why did it become unpopular? I want to explore that. It’s how I’m wired. So since everyone is focusing on doing things with as little effort as possible, of course, I end up wanting to move into this method.
I’m including two resources below. The first one is a playlist and a YouTube channel that gives you all the information and the second one is a link to the textbook on the Palmer method that is currently in the public domain and you can get it from project Gutenberg, but you should probably be mindful that it’s not probably gonna be the kind of thing that you would want to just read on your phone.

The reason why I want to learn Palmer method is because I think I might end up developing meaningful amounts of hand arthritis as I get older, and the Palmer method is one of the only types of cursive that you can do if you don’t have a lot of coordination in your hands.
