Rec Room & patio vibes, August 20, 2023.
Not much sun today but we made the most of it. The palliative patient did her usual people watching, inspected the garden, and avoided the wasps. Tomatoes are coming in. Seth’s new Palookaville was heavy: a rumination on memory, the way age and experience clouds it, and the footnotes left by the supporting cast in our lives. A showcase of a master craftsman at work. Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s incredible four year run on Daredevil comes to an end and I’m looking forward to seeing what the new creative team has planned. Dark Places: Hollywood Special was a fun horror comic. Will add to my pull list.
One of the things I notice the most at work is the regular deluge of dudes who in the process of buying things, denigrate their spouses. I offer them their receipt — « oh no, don’t want the wife to know » or some variation on that theme. « Y’know what I mean eh bud? » and it’s like, no man I really don’t. First off, the affectation on the wife drives me insane, and then, man really, I’m sorry you’re such a shitty person.
Maybe I’m lucky that my spouse and I are both into a lot of the same things, and for those solo interests, we kind of encourage each other? Was mentioning this pet peeve as we exchanged thoughts on the books we were reading today.
Tangent over. I dunno, dudes just need to stop being shitty.
Coming in the spring of 2023 from Drawn & Quarterly, look for the 24th issue of Seth’s Palookaville, which “offers readers an invitation into the world and varied artistic practice of the iconic cartoonist.” Read more
