The strike will take place exactly two years after the Tempe train disaster, in which a passenger train and a freight train collided causing the death of 57 people and the injury of 85 others. A massacre that was caused by the firing of employees and the removal of security measures demanded by years of privatization and liberalization of public services under EU policy.

May-Protests against the labor bill scrapping 8-hour workday, overtime payment

Wearing masks and carrying banners, protesters started to flock to downtown Athens on Thursday morning, as demonstrations for Labor Day were moved from May 1 (Easter Saturday) to May 6. Main demand of protesters this year is the withdrawal of the new labor bill that will scrap the 8-hour workday as well as the overtime payment.

Public sector union ADEDY, the Labor Center of Athens and the union of the Communist party, PAME, have called for this strike.

Participants are also unions and associations of workers who have been economically hit particularly from the pandemic measures.

Big Strikes and Demonstrations All Over Greece

Thursday, September 24, was a day of massive and militant demonstrations in many sectors all over Greece.

National Strike was organized by Public Hospital Doctors’ Federation (OENGE) who also held demonstrations in all major cities of Greece. Their main demands were immediate measures to support doctors and healthcare workers the public hospitals against the pandemic.

Maritime Workers’ went on strike in Greece’ biggest port, Piraeus, protesting the attempt of the Government to undermine Collective Contracts of maritime workers.

Teachers, students, parents with the solidarity of the class unions held demonstrations all over Greece demanding immediate measures to protect Public Health and Education, limit the number of students per classroom to 15 and hiring of more teachers and cleaning personnel for schools.
