Young doctors should demand more than a pay rise — they need a life

"A few years ago, I was a registrar on a medical training rota. I was staring down the barrel of another five-plus years of exams, night shifts and rotations before I could call myself a consultant.

I loved medicine. I still do. But the itch to build and solve problems — as opposed to accumulating more competencies — pushed me to start a business. I still care deeply about the NHS. But I couldn’t keep crawling through the tunnel. And it is the tunnel, not just the payslip, that’s behind the recurring problem of junior doctor strikes.

What most people outside the system don’t realise is how long it takes to become a specialist in the UK. After five or six years at medical school, doctors complete a two-year foundation programme. From there, general practice is the shortest route at three years. But nearly every other specialty takes five to eight more. Orthopaedics? Easily 13 to 14 years post-graduation before you can work independently as a consultant."
