Terry Prattchett, Wyrd Sisters
do you ever just sit down and think about how fucking cool humans are?
Re-reading the Voyage of Maél Dúin and am once again reminded how little it would take to make this story into a great scifi series.
You already have the story divided neatly into episodes too: "pilot","the one with the ancient alien artefact (silver column)" "this place is making the landing party act bizarrely we must rescue them""risking life and limb to obtain [resource ]", "the one where the Iocals were freaking out because they thought we were the newcomers prophesized to banish them their lands" "the one with all the supernaturally beautiful immortal women trying to keep us here" "we ate unknown fruit and got intoxicated " all sound like perfectly valid Star Trek episodes
(of course a straight adaptation would make for a great show too)
EVERY STORY WORTH BEING TOLD IS WORTH BEING TOLD TWICE.
EVERY STORY WORTH BEING TOLD IS WORTH BEING TOLD TWICE.
OTHER PEOPLE MAY HAVE WRITTEN A FANFIC WITH A SIMILAR PREMISE BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT YOUR STORY ISN’T VALUABLE.
hi i wanna talk about something really personal for a second here.
my dad used to tell me and my siblings bedtime stories.
no, i don't mean he'd read me a story from a book, i mean he would make up his own stories and tell them to us every night.
i remember how every story started: "once upon a time, rocky and bullwinkle were walking through the forest, when suddenly..."
(i had no idea who rocky and bullwinkle were - as far as i was concerned, my dad had made them up)
before he started the story, my dad would usually ask us for some improv prompts - pick a color, pick an animal, pick a place. so rocky and bullwinkle would play around with purple whales at the beach, and stuff like that.
i remember ongoing plot arcs, like the great snuffleball tournament. i remember stories about fairness and discrimination and judging people before you know them, wrapped up in a story about a moose and a squirrel playing games.
it's funny looking back and realizing that the first person who taught me how stories worked was my dad.
i miss him a lot.
“The anthropologists got it wrong when they named our species Homo sapiens ('wise man'). In any case it's an arrogant and bigheaded thing to
Hey here's a fun lil thing
In The Science of Discworld II: The Globe, the argument is made that storytelling was one of the main causes of our evolution into people as you generally think of them.
But the best part is its suggestion that we be called not Homo sapiens, or wise man.
But instead Pan narrans, or storytelling chimp.
Because why set ourselves so very apart, claim ourselves distinct, when that's really the fundamentals boiled down. We're some silly chimps smart enough to be stupid.
i feel my stories inside me, rippling under my skin, coiled like sleeping dragons and sometimes their roiling fire is all that keeps me from freezing to death in this world
