Flag of Russia

The current flag of Russia was adopted in 1993. There exist conflicting stories about the design’s creation, both of which connect it to the tricolor of the Dutch Republic. One account states that Tsar Alexis I, when asked by his Dutch lead engineer for a flag to wave on the nation's first frigate, differed to the engineer for a flag design. Another account states that Tsar Peter the Great, interested in European-style shipbuilding, decided to model the flag off of the Dutch flag that adorned a frigate he ordered. In any case, the flag is the same color triband of the Netherlands, albeit with a different sequence. The colors, which have since been adopted as the Pan-Slavic colors, represent God (white), the King (Blue), and the People (Red). The sequence is of the colors on the flag is meant to reflect their priority. Many variations of the flag were used until the October revolution established the Soviet government. Following the USSR's collapse a new version of the original flag was readopted, and in 1993 the colors were updated once again.
