The Myth of the Pancrei
(This one goes out to my main man Jake) Many eons ago, before dinosaurs, before whatever came before dinosaurs, but after the big bang, there lived the Pancrei. The Pancrei were a tribe of biped pancreases that were distinctive for their long kilts and their penchant for tramp stamp tattoos. They were not a peace-loving tribe, in fact they often hunted in the woods and forests for weaker creatures to dismember in nasty ways. They would then eat the remains, or sometimes use them to play an early form of skee ball. The Pancrei were not to be trifled with. Well one day one member of the Pancrei decided that she had had enough of this way of life. She took to the mountains alone, after telling her family 'I am not a mindless eating machine, I believe I have a higher purpose on this planet than to simply roam and kill and maim and play stupid games.' 'Go then Sheila, and may you find your higher purpose' said her mother, before stalking off to play another game of skee ball. Sheila walked for many days, she went without food or water until her skin was rough and dry, and her long kilt had become frayed after being dragged through so many hedgerows that were popular in the mountains at the time. Within a few days though, she arrived at a mountain peak, where below her she could see all the damage and hedgerows that the Pancrei had created in their wake. She shed a tear, and slowly removed her kilt, saying 'No longer will I live in this bondage. Tell me my higher purpose, oh mighty creators of this world.' As her kilt rolled gently down the mountainside, she heard a voice, loud and clear, 'Your purpose is to produce a hormone that converts glucose into a form that can be absorbed by skeletal muscles and fat tissue'. She began to weep. Finally, she thought. Finally, she understood.
