The history between Jack and Liam doesn't matter, not to Max, not until its suddenly shoved in his face every week. It's an impossible task Liam is given, his dream in the form of a bullet, and Red Bull practically leave the gun in Max's hands.
What they have before that is new, delicate in a way Max doesn't do, but he devours the hero worship in Liam's green eyes when he looks up from his knees, and Max tells himself that doesn't make him a bad person. Jack doesn't seem to know what personal space is, and it gets worse when Liam gets demoted, a stray hand always reaching out to touch—Max not close enough now to do anything about it except fight against rising jealousy.
Until he sees Jack corner Liam backstage at Saudi and uses the opportunity to let him know it doesn't matter what team Liam is driving for, he belongs to Max.
