Field Trip #1: Foggy Bottom Whole Foods, February 12th
Robin
The cereal was located on the edge of the store in an aisle that also included granola, hot cereals, shelf stable milk (cow, soy, almond, ect.), and baking goods. The aisle was next to the dairy aisle. The cereal took up 3/5th of one side of the aisle in total 6 shelves with 6 rows on each and there were 12 different brands of cereal present with 1 to 21 types of cereal per brand. I found the Kashi packaging most interesting as it was more artistic and simple then that of most cereal.
During this trip the binaries present in the packing caught my attention finding uniform vs non-uniform packaging, organic vs non-organic, and children’s vs adult’s cereal. The boxes were primarily uniform in size, even between brands, with the 3 brands that had smaller or larger boxes along with some bagged cereal distinctly different compared to the uniformity of the majority of the packages. To reduce the visual impact of these non-uniform packages they were often placed on the top or bottom shelves. The organic vs non-organic distinction was for the majority of the cereal was not very clear with some of the brands organic and some not, but no major distinction between the two except for the Whole Food’s 365 brand cereal which had organic and conventional types of cereal with the packaging clearly marking the difference. The organic packaging was warmer, with green tones compared to the stark white conventional packaging. Then children’s cereal was indicated by differences in the packaging from the adult’s cereal. It ranged from having whole themed packing to slight variations of the adult cereal packing with just extra color added in the written name of the cereal. No matter how complete or slight the difference was it was always clear whether the cereal was marked to children or adults.
Going forward it will be interesting to see if these or other binaries are also present and to what extent or if different themes and ideas present themselves and what they may be.
