I was on Freda's podcast a few months ago, and she is an extremely kind and caring woman. She also doesn't have a huge platform. Billionaire JK Rowling and millionaire Helen Joyce (who originally took the photo) love to go after trans people who can't fight back. Rowling posted the upskirt photo while demanding Freda debate her- a vague threat that she will keep harassing her until she complies. The tweet is still up from 9 days ago. How is this activism, feminism, or anything outside of flagrant bullying?

The shocking thing about Laura Dodsworth’s pictures of 100 women’s breasts isn’t the flesh on show, or the many shapes and sizes, but the realisation that images of unairbrushed, non-uniform breasts seem to be so rare. “We see images of breasts everywhere,” says the 41-year-old photographer, “but they’re unreal. They create an unflattering comparison but also an unobtainable ideal. I wanted to rehumanise women through honest photography.”

This has been a common method for a long time in some states

The idea is that a Senator's sibling/spouse/parent/child knows their intentions and policies better than a political rival or a random person would. It's a pretty good way to prevent political assassinations tbh

Well as much as I'm not American and have only experienced MAGA from the outside, I feel completely qualified to give my very expert, scholarly hot take.

Maybe it really just amounts to some confusing combination of Trump's own positive attitudes toward authoritarianism (since MAGA is at its core a personality cult) and a healthy dose of strong general anti-establishment sentiment easily sliding over into just "anti-American" ("democtatic elites") sentiments, maybe with some disguised isolationism somewhere too (if America shouldn't intervene in Ukraine, they are to some degree kind of required to argue that America shouldn't police with Russia, or anyone else for that matter, in the broader sense)

But if I had to give some single reason that honestly probably covers most of it, it's just money. What are "liberal values" in the face of investment opportunities, etc, business is good, something. (Qatar really is insanely obscenely rich. It's like the Norway of the MENA)

Of course you also really can't discount just how susceptible a group with intense mistrust in the MSM is to "alternative narratives", a.k.a. Russian and Chinese propaganda campaigns

Russia has invested heavily in troll farms, politicians, and influencers to divide the American population and sway parts of it to their side (MAGA and tankies). They’re far more adept at memetic warfare than the US, which is why they’ve been so successful. They’re also not the only country, or even organization to do this. I’m less familiar with whatever is going on with Qatar, but if they are influencing the American population, I would expect it to be in similar ways.

Nations have always tried to influence each other’s population. A classic example would be Radio Free Europe, which broadcast American perspectives on the news to Warsaw Pact countries. But the advent of the Internet has transformed the flow of propaganda. Everyone can access information from anywhere. So any sufficiently organized group—this category is NOT limited to nation-states, btw—can spread their message if they understand how to manipulate internet audiences. This is memetic warfare. Successfully targeting a powerful nation’s population, as is the case here, means that the attacker can influence the culture of that nation, and by extension, the path that nation takes in the future. Soft power, when effectively used, is terrifying.

I want to emphasize that everything I’ve written here is intended as neutral observations. Russia is one of the better known cases of successful memetic warfare, but there are many other organizations pursuing this strategy (remember, this group is NOT limited to nation-states, I can’t emphasize this enough), and that list will only grow. The reason the US hasn’t joined those ranks isn’t because we’re more moral or anything. It’s because we’re incompetent.

Quick shout out to the Down syndrome kid from my after-school program back when I was in grade school. Like yea he had the usual issues but he was a sweetheart and quite funny; and one day both his parents showed up at the same time to pick him up and I had the experience of meeting a family of genetically disabled people that had jobs and a home and a kid in school and it was a profoundly normalizing experience for me like I couldn’t take eugenicists seriously after that because like “no they totally can have whole entire meaningful lives with marriage and children and work and hobbies have you not met Dennis??” Anyway quick shout out to Dennis you were a real one
