I am sorry, because I am sure you have answered this before, but how did you get into languages?
no need to apologize! I'm canadian that's my job
long story: very accidentally but basically I was a huge nerd when I was young and made up very very complex invented languages for someone who was 10 years old and I never really thought of linguistics and language as a career path. I also studied French from a very young age and was always interested in learning other languages (I wanted to learn Spanish, Mandarin, and Japanese when I was young too) and I've always kinda wanted to learn languages so that I could see the world and speak to those I met along the way
but then I took German as a third language in my first year of university by accident because I needed to fill space in my schedule and I discovered I loved it and I loved learning about the reasons behind language. my professor was very interested in linguistics and grammar and really got me interested and it was around that time that my friend's mum who is a PhD linguist and prof at my school told me I should consider taking linguistics, and frankly I hated the major I was originally in so I took a risk and switched into linguistics and since then I haven't even considered studying anything else because of how much I love my program. it requires me to take other languages beyond what I've already learned to give me more background and honestly it helps me to see the world totally differently, in a way where every language is on par with one another and every language has something new to offer to me.
short story: I'm a nerd who likes talking to as many people as possible
