i genuinely don’t understand how people don’t read the Aeneid first and foremost as a story about displacement and the suffering caused by war.

aeneas and the remnants of troy turned away from every safe harbor. andromache and helenus building a smaller, sadder echo of a lost city, mourning ghosts that refuse to stay buried. infelix dido, who fled her home and is denied the chance to heal with the one person who understands her grief. turnus and juturna trying to defend what is theirs, only to be damned and unmade by the gods.

the dead are not distant. they are mangled, torn, unfinished. an aristeia looks like glory until you see the bodies it leaves behind. an aristeia becomes horror the moment you become one of its victims.

yes, you see rome’s future. yes, there’s a procession of heroes, the language of empire, the spectacle of it all. a gleaming shield.

but that belongs to the underworld. that belongs to the gods. and even then it’s shown through the gate of false dreams. illusions. eidolons. something already slipping away, too ephemeral to grasp. what use is talk about sparing the weak when you are the weak and you were not spared?

and then you have to keep living.

everyone else is dead. but you’re still here. homeless, stuttering, afraid, responsible for too many mouths, aching for something as small and impossible as your mother’s touch.

say what you will about the Habsburgs but I really appreciate how many of them created massive baroque synecdoches of their own neuroses. Charles V drove himself crazy trying to manage an intercontinental empire in the 1500s and then spent his final years in a monastery surrounded by clocks, obsessively trying to get all of them to tick in unison. Philip II was a meticulous and obsessively pious introvert and he turned his palace into a bureaucratic warehouse with him sitting at the top floor, correcting the grammar of his advisors’s letters like he was grading essays. Rudolf II was completely checked out of his role as emperor, obsessively collecting foreign curiosities while wars and religious revolts slowly devoured the Holy Roman Empire, just like the live lions and tigers wandering the halls of Prague Castle and attacking servants at random. All of them (the Habsburgs not the lions and tigers) had debilitating prognathism from centuries of inbreeding to keep their ‘noble blood’ (and to keep their territories consolidated), their bodies falling apart from the sheer weight of their dynastic history and endless pursuit of purity and centralization. It’s bizarrely and tragically beautiful.

You were there.” His mouth curves into something like a smile, and for once it reaches his eyes, fragile as a bruise. “Is it so strange for us—Dardania and Argos, always second place—to do the same? I have been in your debt for years. I still carry the charm you gave me at the start of the war.” His voice falters on the admission. “But I do not know what would please you now.”

The memory of that charm stirs like a ghost beneath Aeneas’ skin. A thing once pressed warm into another man’s palm, given without armor or calculation. The boy who offered it is long dead. Memory is a thing that aches because it proves tenderness existed before the terrible carve of war.

Smooth is the Descent is a DELICIOUS dioneas slowburn fic with some of the most intense battle scenes ever and the softest intimacy!!! It is so well thought out and Vivi's love for the source material pours through every line of her bewitching prose 🙌🙌 must-read even if you're not super into dioneas this is just a beautiful retelling of the Iliad in general with captivating emotions and backstage politics wrapped in a beautiful bow of Vivi's masterful writing 🎉 READ IT! You won't regret it!
