Honestly, reading anti-censorship discussions and especially the discussions of self-censorship makes me remember the German dub of Naruto. Because it was one of those cases.
For reference: most anime that we got dubbed into German we got a version with the Japanese cut, and little to no censorship. The major exception there was Yu-Gi-Oh! where we got a version based on the US dub, rather than the Japanese one.
And then there was Naruto. Naruto was based on the US version, BUT CENSORED EVEN MORE. Because for some reason they felt that even the US version was still too violent for children. So they removed ALL blood from that, and all references to death. Which made the show just... weird.
Including highlights like: "Oroshimaru, the master of silently disappearing people", and "he mastered robbing people extremely fast", and who could forget the flashback of Sasuke running to the squeaky clean Uchia residence featuring not a single dead body or a drop of blood and screaming: "Itachi, why did you hide our family?!"
It was only more stupid because this was airing in the same timeslot as other anime, including other shonen anime with the usual level of blood and violence, and no censorship. But because the people dubbing Naruto were different from those dubbing most of those others it just got... this weird, weird treatment.
