Hookupu is a big part of merrie monarch. This is where i leave my physical and get into the spiritual. This is where I dance for my kupuna, makua, and aumakua. This is where I allow the elements to come in and show themselves theough me. Merrie monarch is a competition. Spirituality isnt a competition to me. Love for my culture isn't a competition to me. Who is more traditional isn't a competition to me. Those arent categories on the score sheet. Getting to dance on that stage is about hard work and making your ohana proud. Its about the people next to you. Its about my kumu with his eyes closed in the back in the zone pa'i 'ing his ipu who doesnt even watch us because he is part of our hula and trusts that we are guided like hokulea in the storm that still finds its way home.
