Koreans say incoherently ‘Oh, I see’ when they come to know some couple have been married for 12 years, while when they heard another couple have been together for 12 years but not married, they are likely to say with anxious faces that ‘That’s too long, especially to the woman.’

Koreans also say ‘It can happen. It’s a common practice’ to a couple who split up, even though they have dated for over 12 years, while when a newly married couple breaks up even only after 12 days from the wedding, they shout flippantly ‘Oh my god! They ruined their life!“

I can’t understand this ridiculous situation.

I and my partner P have dated for 12 years and also live together for about half of the period. We still find no significant meaning from the marriage. We set in the corner of our room and assembled a paper mobile set a few days ago. It was our 12th anniversary although she did not noticed that. After all, the paper mobile became our remembrance for the 12th anniversary. It was like the everyday, but will occur to our mind if the hard time comes again, and we’ll say to each other:

'We made that red mobile on that day, sitting in the corner of our room.’

결혼한 지 12년이 되었다고 하면 ‘아, 그렇구나..’라고 그저 생각하면서도 연애가 12년이라고 하면 ‘진짜 오래됐네..’ 라며 감탄과 함께 걱정어린 눈길까지 같이 보내는 건 어쩔 수 없는 일일까. 연애를 12년 하다 헤어지는 건 별 일 아니지만 결혼생활은 12일이라도 했다가 헤어지면 너무나도 큰일이 되어버리다니.. 나로서는 좀 이상하다고 할 수밖에.

박여사님께서는 만약 결혼식을 하게 되면 호암교수회관이나 라쿠치나같은 서울대 안에 있는 결혼식장이 좋겠다고 하신다. 박여사님 집안에 예로부터 친척간에 시험점수로 비교하고 헐뜯고 다른 집 애들 무시하기를 즐겨하시던 어르신이 한 분 계시는 관계로, 그 어르신께 서울대 결혼식이라는 좋은 볼거리를 안겨드리고 싶으시다는 게 그 이유. 그런 목적이라면 갑자기 하루속히 우리의 결혼식을 추진해보고 싶어지기도 한다.

12년이나 되다보니 이제 기념일이 되어도 딱히 하는 일은 없다. 밥먹는 것 말고 오늘 같이 한 별다른(?) 일이라고는 그제 박여사님께서 현대미술관에서 사 오신 종이 모빌의 공동 제작뿐. 그러니 이게 우리의 12주년 기념 작품이 된 거네. 별 것 아니지만 언젠가 힘든 날이 오면 오늘 생각이 나긴 할 것 같다. 그 때 같이 방구석에서 저걸 만들었었지.. 하고.
