Ella’s favourite toy were the green tea cups with sunflowers painted on them that were gifted to her last Christmas by her uncle Padfoot.
She played with them and hosted fairy tea parties in the cottage’s garden during summer. She claimed that the fairies were coming to drink her tea with her and her friends. ‘Her friends’ being her collection of stuffed animals.
The tea was not imaginary at all. Whenever she picked her teacups up she would run towards her father and ask him to make tea. Remus, unable to resist his little girl, always made it.
On winter she played with her father; or with Sirius; or with James and Harry, after Harry had thrown a tantrum on how he couldn't play with her because he was way too old for it (he was only months older than Ella), and James had threatened him on grounding him if he made Ella cry.
You had played once or twice with Ella. You wished it would have been more times, but your job kept you away for long periods of time.
You would often tell Remus your worry of not spending enough time with your daughter, but he always, with some kisses in between, would calm you down by saying how Ella doesn't care when you're missing because you give her so much love whenever you come home.
Today was one of those days, you had to stay in Belgium for a whole week, while Remus stayed at your house in Wales, taking care of Ella.
“Daddy! You have to make tea!” Ella said, entering the kitchen with her green teacups hugged against her chest, trying her very best not to drop any of them.
“Another tea party?” Remus smiled, moving towards the kettle.
“Yes, with Mr. Giggles. But you're invited too Daddy!” She left the tea cups on the floor, unable to reach the table yet. Then she ran out of the kitchen to find Mr. Giggles, the teddy bear Lily had bought her on her first birthday and James had named.
“Then I shall join the party.” Remus said, putting the teacups on the table while Ella reappeared in the room.
“I want the tea Mama likes.” Ella demanded.
“Yes, it’s tasty.” She answered, standing on her tippy-toes next to her father to see how he prepared the tea.
Ella loved ‘Mama’s tea’ as she would call it. You drank a lot of Chamomile because you liked it and it helped you sleep better. You also let Ella try it once, only because it isn't bad for kids, and she loved it.
Ella saw how her father poured the water with the chamomile bags into a teapot. The teapot was pink with floral relief on its sides. Ella picked it one day, when she accompanied her grandmother Hope to the supermarket. She saw it and told Hope how her daddy made a lot of tea and how she could use that teapot for her tea parties. Hope, who can't deny anything to Ella, bought it for her, and Ella demands Remus to use it every time he makes tea for her and her tea parties.
Once they were seated at the table Remus started pouring the tea in the cups; one for Ella, one for Mr. Giggles, and one for him.
“So, what are we discussing today?” Remus played along, while he saw his daughter picking up the teacup with the pinky raised.
“Mr. Giggles said he wants to ask Lady Pinkpurple to marry him.” Ella said, with her most serious voice. Lady pinkpurple, was another one of her stuffed toys, this one was a bunny with purple hair and pink details.
“Does he?” Remus acted like he was surprised and turned to look at Mr. Giggles. “What wonderful news.”
“Yes. Uncle Jamie told me Mr. Giggles has to ask her in a cute way.” Ella kept acting like a business woman, trying to keep a serious face. Remus loved to see his daughter like this, it was funny how locked in she was whenever she played, acting like she was inside a movie.
“Has uncle James told you anything about how he should ask Lady Pinkpurple to marry him?” Remus asked, curious about what James had told her.
“He told me it has to be in a place with a lot of flowers. Mr. Giggles has to stand on one knee and give Lady pinkpurple a ring." Ella explained. Remus nodded along Ella's explanation. “He also showed me the ring he gave aunt Lily, it’s really pretty,” then Ella grabbed a badly done ring from the pocket of her cardigan. It was made out of paper, painted with her pink markers. “This is the ring Mr. Giggles is going to give her, it’s pretty, right?”
“It certainly is, indeed.” Remus smiled when the little girl left the paper ring in Remus’ hand. He examined it carefully, like it was actually made of gold and he had to make sure it was real.
“Uncle Jamie also told me Mama doesn’t have a ring.” Ella took back Mr. Giggles’ ring from her father and looked at him with her big brown eyes.
“That’s because we're not married, pup.” Remus explained. Ella’s eyebrows furrowed.
“That can’t be.” Ella said, and Remus had to hold back a laugh from his daughter's indignation. “You have to get her a ring, and ask her in a place with a lot of flowers.”
“I’ll think about it, pup.”
It wasn't like Remus didn't want to marry you, the total opposite, he really wanted to. But with your work, and then your unexpected pregnancy with Ella, there hasn’t been a convenient time to ask. He has had the ring for a while now. It had been hidden inside a drawer of his nightstand, covered by letters and broker quills.
And he thought that maybe Ella was right, he has to ask you, it’s now or never, he can't keep postponing it.
“Here, give Mama this ring, I’ll make another one for Mr. Giggles to give Lady Pinkpurple.” Ella gave Remus the paper ring back.
“But this ring is really pretty, are you sure you don't want Mr. Giggles to keep it?” Remus asked.
“Very sure, I’ll make a better one for Mr. Giggles so you can give Mama that one. Remember you have to ask her in a place with a lot of flowers, that is very important.” Ella nodded along her words while Remus' smile went widening for the tenderness he felt looking at the little girl.
“Alright, I’ll take it into account.” Remus nodded.
Ella left her seat and grabbed Mr. Giggles from his chair.
“The tea party has ended.” she said and went upstairs to her room, probably to make another ring.
Remus' smile never left his face, he loved his daughter and how much she acted like you. Maybe Ella was right, it was finally the perfect moment to ask you to marry him.
