Yesterday I saw the largest specimen of Edgeworthia chrysantha (paperbush, mitsumata) I had ever seen. Today I went back to take these photographs and the scent of the flowers was on the breeze flowing down the road before I reached this front garden. This deciduous shrub has very flexible shoots and is native to China and the Himalayas, being named after its traditional use in paper making. It thrives in a sheltered position in full sun or light dappled shade in well-drained, humus-rich loamy soil.

みつまた

肝心な樹木の種類についてだが、あいにく腹の足しにならない植物について私の知識は微少である。この時季に黄色い花を咲かせているなら「ヤマブキ」ではないかと最初思ったが花弁の形が全然違う。インターネットで調べてみると「ミツマタ」であることが判明した。それにしても、昔なら図書館に行って図鑑の絵と比較しながら時間を掛け丹念に調べ上げなくてはならないところ、今じゃ検索サイトでいくつかの特徴でサーチすれば該当する大量の写真データが瞬時に表示されるから、種類を調べるのはラクになったよね。まあ今も昔も、詳しい人に聞けばすぐわかるのだけどね。

ミツマタの名は一箇所から三つに枝分かれする特徴に由来するが、よく見ると四つに枝分かれしているところもいくつかある。ただ二股の所はなかったね。昔からその樹皮が和紙の原料として利用され、紙幣の原料の一つにもなっている。花は芳香があり、実際嗅いでみるとジャスミンのようないい香りがする。黄色と白色の割とボリュームのある花鞠が細い枝の先端に咲く姿はユニークで、後日沢縁で見つけた株を我が地の殺風景な斜面に移植してみた。あるサイトによればこの種は移植が難しいとのことだが、上手く根付いて来年ここで花が見れるといいなあ。

（2021-3-15 追記）無事根付いて、一年後に花が咲きました。丈はほんの少しだけ成長したようです。
