#257 - Red-bodied Swallowtail
Back in the mid-nineties I did six months of entomology as part of my university degree in Marine Science (Of the two, the entomology has been much more useful by way of employment status).
Anyway, part of the course was making an insect collection, which I enthusiastically threw myself into, and spent hours before class at the Center for Entomological Research and Insecticide Technology, keying out my catches. I ended up with several hundred species, dozens of families, and 6 cases of the things, including many you'll be seeing over coming months, and a few you have already.
This butterfly was the reward for the best collection that year.
Red-bodied Swallowtails are a genus of tropical Papilionid, usually found in the Indomalayan zone, that feed on Dutchman's Pipes. The caterpillars sequester aristolochic acid from the plant, which is highly poisonous, and helpfully advertise the fact with their striking coloration.
