My journey is far from over, and some days it feels like I will never reach my goal of having no detectable disease, but I can't let it stop me from living my life. Throughout everything, I haven't let my cancer take my happiness. Seeing my name on this year's @silvermoonbrewing F*Cancer was so empowering. Though my thyroidectomy scar is almost invisible at this point, I'm still healing and fighting through TSH suppression. It's been a little over a year and I'm still adjusting to having to take medication every day for the rest of my life in order to have any sort of metabolism. Abstract Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have recently been identified as crucial biomarkers of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). In this study, we aimed to investigate the biological function and potential clinical role of lncRNA ENST00000494165 in PTC. From January 2019 to December 2019, 226 PTC patients who underwent preoperative thyroid US-fine needle aspiration biopsy(US-FNAB) and confirmed by postoperative pathology were enrolled at our hospital. Thyroid tissues were collected from FNAB samples and stored in the refrigerator at –80°C. qRT-PCR (quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction) analysis was performed to detect the relative expression level of ENST00000494165. CCK-8 (Cell Counting Kit-8) and colony formation assay were performed to detect the cell proliferation ability. Cell migration and invasion abilities were evaluated by transwell and scratch assay. We also evaluated the relation between the expression level of ENST00000494165 and the clinicopathological features of PTC. Functional assays demonstrated that the cell proliferation, migration and invasion abilities were all promoted in PTC cell lines when ENST00000494165 expression was overexpressed. The expression of ENST00000494165 in the lymph node metastasis group was significantly higher than that in non-lymph node metastasis group. High level expression of ENST00000494165 was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis of PTC (P < 0.001). The overexpression of ENST00000494165 promoted the progression, migration and invasion abilities of PTC and was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis in PTC. ENST00000494165 could act as a possible promoter gene and a potential biomarker for PTC.

My Cancer Story #2

So it’s been a week...

I don’t really believe I have cancer yet, but I’ve read the papers from my doctor’s office and it says it right there. We also still don’t have a surgery date, they said to wait another week. Also I’m not going to be seeing a paediatrician since they have no experience in thyroid surgery, so I get to go to the big boy hospital with all the big scary adults.

Honestly I’m starting to get a little scared and stressed, I mean before I found out about the cancer my dog got cancer, my dad got arrested, and my grandma past away, so it’s been a crazy past few months. Also the doctors are worried about my cancer because my tumour is way bigger than 1 cm and when it’s bigger than that the risk of it spreading is 75%. So that information added with the fact that I’ve had it for three years they don’t know how far it’s spread or how bad it is and they won’t be able to find out until the surgery. 

Another thing, my family doesn’t exactly have a lot of money, especially with my dad in jail (who earnt the most out of everyone) and my mum still having to look after my younger brother.

On a lighter note; my older sister and mum have both accidentally let it slip that my grandad is coming up from Tasmania to come support me. He and I used to be really close when I was younger, and before his wife (my nana) passed from pancreatic cancer. as you can see cancer runs in the family. But I am very excited to see him again, it’s been so long.

I’ve also been having the urge to do something kinda crazy but not too crazy ya know? like cut my hair short or something (I have pretty long hair). I don’t know about that though since I really like my long hair. I’ll take any suggestions though if anyone sees this and/or reads all the way through this.

My Cancer Story #1

When I was 12 (2017) late one night I noticed a lump on my neck that wasn’t there before. My first sleepy thought was that it was an adam’s apple... so I googled to see if girls had one, and if it was meant to be on the side of the neck. Eventually I deemed my neck lump completely fine and healthy then forgot about it until this year (2020). One afternoon I was laughing hard at something my mum said and she noticed the huge lump on my neck for the first time since you can’t really see it unless I tilt my head back like I did just then. We went to the doctors to get it checked out. Eventually that lead to getting an ultrasound, then an ultrasound guided fine needle biopsy. 

That biopsy happened on Wednesday last week, and we weren’t expecting the results until Monday (Tomorrow) but we got them sooner than expected.

On Friday after school, I get home and my mum told me to sit down on the couch. “I have something to tell you. The doctors called about your results.” She told me. She then proceeded to tell me that I have Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma or more commonly known as Papillary Thyroid Cancer.

The doctors are already organising to get my whole thyroid surgically removed and we should find out a surgery date by the end of the week.

I have unknowingly had cancer for three years... which means it is likely that it has spread to my lymph nodes now.

The most surprising part about this to me is the fact that this is a cancer that is most common in 30-50 year olds, not 12-15 year olds.

Honestly I wasn’t even surprised when my mum told me I have cancer, I guessed it about a month ago. I just don’t care anymore, but at least this cancer has a very high survival rate from my research.

Also I have named the lump on my neck! Her name is Gertrude.

^^ Gertrude, I gave her a face. She is as big as the circle for her head, so about the size of a golfball. She is a toxic bitch and is no longer welcome in my body. 

I know you can’t really see the lump, but it is there and it hurts.

I did the Coffee Masters program and I am a certified #coffeemaster ...I also have my own black apron for work 😍 2. 99.9999% of my wardrobe consists of black, grey, or white clothing. I rarely wear colors. 3. I recently had a heart procedure done to correct issues I've had with my heart for the past 10 years. Last year I was diagnosed with #papillarythyroidcancer and am now cancer free! 4. I've never seen The Matrix movies, Back to the Future, or the Terminator movies. (But I am currently watching The Matrix since I'm in bed rest!) 5. One of my favorite stories of all time is Alice in Wonderland. I also did a photo series based on the book! Tell me about you!
