Tegan was there for him when he started to lose his appetite, and she was there for him when he was getting confused easily. He didn't recognise one of his doctors, and once it hit him that he knew fully well who it was, the look on his face was heartbreaking. She watched as Daniel's facade was breaking, and he was soon a shell of the person he was. He barely spoke and instead, he just laid there lifeless as the doctors prodded and poked him. Daniel was suffering through headaches that made him wake up at night, screaming and shouting for help. His breathing was getting irregular, and he soon needed more support than ever before. And the nights where he spent nursing a nose bleed or when he coughed up blood, he looked set to give up. And Tegan sat with him, holding his hand and telling him everything would be okay. But she knew there was a huge chance it wouldn't be, especially when his parents were sitting by the bedside telling him that it was okay to give up and that he didn't need to be brave anymore, which she knew Daniel would have rolled his eyes at if he had the energy.
And Tegan was fully sure he did give up, when she awoke the next morning to find him in peaceful slumber. Daniel looked frail, and almost like a china doll. He hadn't woken up that day, or the day after. He was holding on, barely, but it was enough for her. The doctors were considering if there was anything that they could do at this point, but his parents put up a fight. While they were looking into other possible treatments, she stayed by his side, barely leaving his room. She called her family to let them know what was happening, and although she felt guilty for leaving her sisters, she needed to be here with him. And she hated leaving Mathew, but what could she do? She couldn't leave his family alone, they were leaning on her more than she used them for comfort. When the whole Brady family came over, she stayed at the sideline, too scared to leave. Tegan watched from a distance as a family was saying their goodbyes to a child going too soon, a much loved member of their family that didn't deserve to go.
And then the impossible happened. The doctors came up with an idea, that might have given Daniel more time. It wouldn't have completely fought off the cancer cells, but it would bring it down and stop the cancer spreading to his bones. Rubidomycin would mean more chemotherapy, but they were willing to do anything to make him better. The treatment started, and things were starting to look up. Tegan was finally feeling more confident again, and Daniel had started showing more signs of improving. Family were flying back home to Texas, and his parents were starting to ease up on him.
Tegan had stayed in his room on the cool afternoon of the 11th. Not much had changed and he was still stable. She had given up reading to him, because her voice was growing hoarse and she could hardly keep her eyes open. She laid her head on his bed and closed her eyes, hoping to catch up on some sleep. Just as she felt herself relax, she heard a small noise and looked up. She could have sworn she saw some movement from Daniel, and she stood up to get closer to him. "Daniel?" she asked, seeing if there was any response. There wasn't any, and she started to feel horrible for getting her hopes up. She stayed watching him, where she saw his eyes starting to slowly flicker open. "Daniel?" she asked again, starting to smile at the sight in front of her. Once Daniel had gotten used to his surroundings, he cleared his throat and turned slowly to face her. "I know it's not much, but you could have showered," he said in a rough, shaky voice. She started to laugh and wrapped her arms around her, trying her best not to cry. "Don't do that to me again!" Daniel held her closer to him and he coughed a little, before he answered her. "I don't plan on doing that anytime soon."
