FINN HUDSON
Honestly, he wasn’t exactly sure what a Best Man was supposed to do. He knew it probably wasn’t kiss the bride a few days before the wedding but, you know, that happened. He was probably, like, the worst Best Man in history. And it was even worse because he knew he should have told Mr. Schue even though Miss P. told him not to. That’s what best men did, right? Told the groom the hard stuff before the wedding? Or did they lie about the hard stuff until after the wedding was over and then tell him and hope he doesn’t, like, punch him in the face? He wasn’t really sure because he’d never been the Best Man before. Kurt was his dad’s Best Man at his mom and Burt’s wedding, though he would never admit to being, like, Man of Honor or whatever. He just pretended Rachel was his mom’s Maid of Jonor and he was allowed to stand by her at the altar.
Rachel. Crap. He knew she was coming in, Kurt had been confirming and re-confirming their flight with his dad all week. He knew it was probably tough for Rachel to get away from NYADA and all but he thought it was really awesome that she was making the time. He knew Mr. Schue meant a lot to her even if they fought, like, all the time. Miss P. not so much but he thought that was because she gave really crappy advice sometimes. ("I'm really sorry that I don't have a pamphlet handy for you right now, but I'm pretty sure if I did it would say something like 'Get over it', okay?") How was he supposed to get over the fact that he kissed someone else’s fiancée? (He pointedly ignored the fact that Quinn was wearing a diamond ring that Sam bought her when he kissed her two years ago.) But anyway. Rachel would be here and he would see her for the first time since he caught a glimpse of her at Grease. She’d looked so beautiful and part of him wanted to talk to her and part of him wanted nothing more than to hide in the shadows until he was sure she was gone.
He’d gotten lucky (if you could call it that) and not seen her while she was home. He felt like a jerk for avoiding her but she hadn’t gone out of her way to see him either so he supposed they were even. It sucked that he was still in love with her; if he wasn’t it wouldn’t have hurt so bad knowing she avoided him like he avoided her. He was pretty sure he wouldn’t be able to avoid her tonight though. Maybe through the ceremony and all but not at the party. You always ran into people at the reception and, as Best Man, he needed to give a speech so she would find him nonetheless. Maybe she wouldn’t want to talk to him at all. Maybe he wanted her to though. And maybe he should focus on being the Best Man and not on the fact that the ceremony was starting.
Except the ceremony never happened. Sue came down the aisle during the wedding march and he was pretty sure he was in the Twilight Zone or something. But then she was saying that Miss P. took off and oh my god his kiss had ruined the wedding! He’d only done it on instinct! When he and Rachel were together and she was freaking out over something that didn’t need to be freaked out over, he would lean in and kiss her and that would fix the problem. Mostly. He hadn’t even thought about it not being Rachel until he opened his eyes and saw his guidance counselor turned colleague staring back at him with wide eyes. Not exactly his best moment at that school. Not exactly his worst, either though. Silver linings and all that.
Sue announced the reception and Finn didn’t move, still standing next to Will until his teacher – friend, now – sat down on the steps of the altar. “I can’t believe she left me standing here,” Will said, disbelief in his breathless voice. “I though … she planned this whole wedding to a tee, Finn. I can’t … I can’t even imagine a reason why she would do this.” Finn could. He could think of two. His top lip and his bottom lip. Should he come clean and tell Will why Miss P. ran away? “Do you have any idea what could have happened?”
Or not. “No, Mr. Schue,” he said in what he hoped was an innocent voice, though he felt like he was being strangled by the guilt. “No idea. Maybe she just needed some air and she’ll be back?” But then Santana was coming in and telling them that the party was going on and Will said he was going to look for Emma and he stood and nodded to Santana. “I’ll come with you.” She eyes him up and down and told him to not get grabby, she knew how hot she looked but she only wanted one pair of hands on her that night. He mumbled something about Sam probably objecting to that but he would never count Santana out. When she wanted something, she got it no matter what. He offered her his arm and she eyed it for a moment. “I suppose you’ll do for now,” she told him with a small smile. He returned the gesture before the two headed out. Once to the reception hall, Santana ditched him in favor of the bar and he rolled his eyes and laughed before making his way over to Puck, who was leaning against the wall, his eyes on his blonde girlfriend. “I want you to know that I don’t think you could possibly get any creepier than you are at this point, so congratulations,” he said in greeting. The friends hugged and Finn rested against the wall beside Puck so they could begin to catch up.
