Stepping outside of the exam room and shutting the door behind her, Tess pauses for a moment. There’s people, and noise, and life is happening out here. Go to the resident’s lounge, get the clothes, get her bag. She coaches herself in her head, pushing away fro the wall and numbly walking. She elects the stairs over the elevator, not wanting to stop and be still, and before she knows it, she’s at the door of the resident’s lounge. Stepping inside, Tess finds it empty, it usually is during the day. She sees Frankie’s stuff in her cubby, but finds herself turning around, exiting the lounge. Her eyes are stinging, it’s hard to breathe, she feels like she’s going to scream. Fifty feet further down the hall there’s a restroom, she pushes into it, and all the stall doors are open and empty. A sob escapes her chest, loud, and Tess doubles over, wrapping her arms around herself, trying not to collapse as she cries.
