Spencer: Guess what
Today, @drkarenhill and I signed our lives away...we bought some land, and by the end of the year, we should be living in our newly built house!

Karen swallows to Spencer’s response. She was hearing him, and what he was saying, but somehow she could not let this sit with her. Because she read past it and she felt there was more to it, and not to mention that as his wife and someone that loved him as much as she did, it was her obligation to question this situation and make sure that in the light of all of this, weeks months even years down the road, he would sit well with his decision. And so Karen nods as Spencer goes on, keeping her eyes on the road. “You don’t, you’re right,” she agrees with him, then gulps. “But and I’m asking this as to what’s in this for you, and not him, but you…” She goes on, trying to weight her words well, come up with the right ones, not wanting to get her thoughts poured out wrong. They reach a red light and Karen leans back in her eyes and turns to her husband, looking at him with softness in her eyes as she mutters, “I just wouldn’t want you to walk away from this and to regret it years from now.” She gulps. “To regret not doing anything when you could’ve… And this isn’t about having a relationship with him or fixing things, when we both know the fixing isn’t for you to do,” she says, wanting to make that clear that she was not judging or telling him to do anything, just opening up the conversation. “I just don’t want you to walk away, and years from now he’s gone and you regret not doing anything, that’s all. And again, I don’t mean this about him, I mean this about you.” She nods, looking him in the eyes, hoping she had spoken her mind right. It made sense in her head, but she was having a hard time putting it into words, mostly because she felt Spencer so closed off, but at the same time so preoccupied about it all.
“Kar, I don’t know how to say it differently so that you get it, or believe me,” Spencer sighs, shaking his head. “I won’t. I don’t care. He is less than nothing to me,” He says. “And I’m sorry, I just really don’t want to waste time or air thinking and talking about him. It’s no skin off of my back, what happens to him. I didn’t think about him before now, and I won’t think about him after,” He says firmly.

Looking up, Karen finds Spencer holding the door open for her. Chuckling, she lightly shakes her head before tilting it. “Thank you,” she mutters, getting in the car. She lets him shut the door for her and watches as he goes around the car to the passenger side, shaking her head and laughing as she watches him. She buckles up and then throws the key in, then puts the car in drive once he is buckled up as well, heading out of the parking lot. A moment of silence settles, but it is all but silence inside of Karen’s mind. She cannot help thinking about Spencer and his father, knowing he had said they should just go back to their lives and wait until they left, but she could not help thinking that there had to be more there. He was pissed off. And if this whole situation pissed him off then he had to care. This was an impossible situation, and she could not imagine how Spencer was feeling about it all, but no matter what the story or the actions that were made, that man was still half of his DNA and she knew Spencer well enough to know he could not be of ice in the face of all of this, not completely. Simply the fact that he was downing drinks at Joe’s alone over this was proof enough. “So what are you gonna do about Justin?” She softly asks as she pulls up on the highway.
The beginning of the car ride is silent as they get on the road. And then she asks what he’s going to do about Justin. He’d thought he’d made himself clear before, he’s not sure where the disconnect is. “Nothing.” He says as though it’s obvious, because it should be. “I don’t owe him anything. I’m pretending he’s not there, like I said.”

Walking hand in hand across the street, Karen breathes in the fresh breeze and just feels grateful for this night where she did not have to rush to her books to study for her upcoming boards; those times were over. She was finally free. Now she could look forward to house/land hunting and baby-making. She could not remember the last time she had walked hand in hand with her husband with a free mind, just enjoying the moment. It felt so good. As they reach the parking lot, Karen smiles and shakes her head as she reaches with her free hand into her bag to get the keys. “I’ll drive,” she tells him, pulling out the keys.
Spencer laughs, shaking his head but opens the drivers side door for her. Once she’s in the car, he circles around to the passenger side and gets in, buckling up.

Head shaking, Karen smiles. “You’re still not driving,” she tells him as she watches him getting up. She smiles some more at his words, eyebrow raising up as he leans in and winks her way, her smile growing as he kisses her. “I’m fine with that,” she responds in-between kisses, wrapping her fingers tight around his before they head out of the bar, waving up at Joe on their way out.
“Whatever you say, dear,” He teases. They both wave to Joe as they exit the bar, and then they head back across the street to the hospital to get in their car. “You sure you don’t want me to drive?” He asks.

Chuckling softly and rolling her eyes, head lightly shaking, Karen holds up a hand and gives him a high five. “That’s if you don’t fall asleep on the way home, or the minute I help you lay down in the couch,” Karen responds, downing the remaining of her glass before setting it back down and reaching for her purse. “Wait here, I’ll pay,” she tells him as she gets off her seat and heads down to the bar to save Joe a trip to their table, given it was a busy night. She pays for their orders and gives him a bit of extra as always, then heads back to Spencer. “Ready?” she asks. “Do you need my help to walk?” She adds, eyebrow raised as she offers a hand, a smile on her face.
Spencer’s a little confused, laughing, watching her walk off. When she comes back and asks if he needs help, he raises an eyebrow. “I’m a giant, babe. I don’t get drunk off of four whiskeys, I’m perfectly fine. I’d be willing to bet my blood alcohol is under the legal limit,” He says, getting up easily. “I’ll hold your hand anyways, though,” He winks, leaning in to kiss her and taking her hand.

A smile grows on Karen’s face as she sets her glass back down, eyes locked with her husband’s the whole time. But her face changes when he points out about Kate’s conception night, and she knew exactly what he had in mind, and a few flashbacks come to mind. Her head slightly tilts and she shakes it lightly, chuckling. “That sink was all but comfortable… and I would like to be fully conscious of our next conception and make the most out of it this time.” Head falling to the other side, Karen smiles and she nods. “How ‘bout I take you home instead,” she asks, and she spots Joe and gestures at him for the bill.
“It was hot though,” He reasons. “And that’s why I said practice. Yea, all right, let’s go home. We have a kid free night, there’s so many possibilities of what we could do there,” Spencer points out. “Kid free night, and no studying for you? We’re both getting laid,” He says, holding his hand up for a high five.

Karen’s eyebrow raises up right away to Spencer’s mention of a tool belt and she sets her glass back down, gulping. When he mentions of Derek, she chuckles and nods. “Good idea,” she says. “I mean Meredith did mention he tried building their deck once, and it wasn’t a success, so I definitely think we’re safer hiring someone rather than doing it ourselves.” She smiles. “Not that I doubt your capacities… And you would look great with a tool belt,” she pauses, “But.” Karen leans forward, slightly bending over the table to mutter to Spencer privately, “We’ve got a baby to make, and sooner rather than later would be nice… I think we’ve had to wait long enough.” She winks at her husband, smiling at him as she leans back in her seat, picking up her glass of wine. “So that means we need a house faster than you and I could build it in time for.” She nods before taking the glass to her mouth to take a sip.
“Mmhm, I could just put a tool belt on for other purposes. Only a tool belt,” He reasons, finishing the last of his glass. “This is true...hey, we could go practice and reenact the night we conceived Kate,” Spencer proposes with a gesture towards the bathroom of the bar.”

“No, obviously,” Karen chuckles, picking up her glass to take a sip. She listens, nodding as he lists off the steps ahead if they were to build, which were all things they could front but just had to plan. And Spencer was right, their dream house might not sit on the land they want, and Karen definitely wanted them to move into a home where they would build memories as a family and therefore, she wanted to stick around that place for a while, long enough to make it meaningful. And so they needed to make it as fitting with their needs and wishes as possible. “I like that,” she nods with a smile, and so breathing in, she sets her glass down and breathes out. “So we’re building,” she smiles and nods before correcting herself. “I mean, we as in definitely not you and me, and especially not right now,” she chuckles, moving her glass up again before stealing another sip.
“Awesome!” He exclaims, taking a sip. “I mean, I’m sure I could figure it out. I could pull off a tool belt. But I’ll ask Derek what builder they used, see if they recommend them,” Spencer says. “We can start looking around to see what land is available.”

Karen raises an eyebrow and smiles at Spencer’s comment - because she sure had been jealous of his crazy memory retention over the last few months. It was most of the time an annoying trait of his personality, in a loving way, but these past few months she definitely envied it a whole lot. Eyebrow still raised, Karen nods as she sips some of her wine, gulping and exhaling as she puts the glass back down. “It is,” she confirms with a strong nod of head. She looks up at him and smiles as he mentions house hunting. She was so excited about that. About all their plans, really. But talking about this while he was intoxicated, or about to be at least, did not feel like the best idea. But she did not want to be the party breaker, either. She resettles in her seat and gulps, and when he asks about whether they should build their dream house or find something already existing, Karen frowns in a thoughtful way, looking away as she thinks. “Mmm, good question… What do you want?” She asks him, leaning eyes on him again. “I mean, I like the idea of us building our own home with plans we made with everything we want, but then that could already exist somewhere,” she shrugs. “I know I don’t want to live in that apartment for years still, especially if we have another baby.”
“I mean, building a house doesn’t have to take years,” He reasons. “If that’s what we want, we just need to find land, find a builder, and be willing to pay,” Spencer says with a shrug. “It might be more straightforward. Because the dream house we want might not be in a location we want. This way we could just find a good location and build.”

While Karen takes a small sip of her wine, her eyebrow raises up seeing Spencer downing the whole content of his whiskey filled glass. Her eyebrow stays up when he motions to Joe to bring down another. She knew Spencer had it rough, she did not particularly liked him numbing it all with this much alcohol, but she also did not want to judge him. She had no idea the pain he felt really, and it was not like he turned to this much alcohol all the time, either. She only hoped he would stop after this next drink, but she had her doubts. She definitely would only have this glass of wine, that said. It sucked a little that their first night together without Kate since her boards would end up with Spencer passed-out drunk on the couch, but oh well. Karen turns to him as he directs a question at her, one he had asked earlier which only hinted that the alcohol was starting to kick in, which said something given his capacity at holding alcohol with his shape and height. She swallows and still pushes on a small smile, nodding. “It was good, other than the valve-repair, it was pretty slow. Definitely great not having to turn to books at any free second, I enjoyed the rest time.”
“That’s great,” He says. “I’m sure that was a relief. I was definitely grateful for my memory when I was getting ready for the boards. But I remember what it felt like after...the pressure relief, feeling like the weight on your shoulders literally disappeared. It’s amazing what an email from the American Board of Surgery can do,” Spencer chuckles. “Mmm, we should talk about house hunting!” He exclaims, taking a sip of his drink. “Should we build our dream home, or try to find something existing?”

Karen’s head tilts to Spencer’s response. She was having a hard time believing this, no matter how many years he had to process this. To be let down by your parent, it could not be ok. Not ever. But still, Karen listens and does not interfere. After all, he was allowed to handle this as he needed to. She was just glad that he had a face to face with the man. And she could understand his anger towards him, and feeling invaded in his sacred place that was the hospital by their visit. It all made a lot of sense. When hearing Spencer say how mad he was that he thought it was ok to ask for part of his body, Karen nods. He was right about that. Given their past, it was not fair of him to come and ask him that. Spencer deserved better. Karen glances down at the table, her hand sliding off of Spencer’s who went to grab his drink. She wraps it around her glass of wine, swirling the alcohol around for a moment. Karen looks up at her husband when he mentions about how he should have known that the other shoe was about to drop after the past few years with her and their daughter, and that absolutely broke her heart to hear. Eyes locking on her husband’s face again, Karen stares at him, frowning, feeling her heart heavy for him. To hear him say how eventually they would leave, that broke her heart. She understood, but it still broke her heart for him. That all there ever would be between his biological father and him would be this, and waiting for him to disappear again. It was horrible. Then to hear him say how they just had to go back to pretending they were not around, Karen just stares back at Spencer, a concerned look on her face. She cannot help but feel like they had to talk about this, part of her felt they had to, but the other part of her knew better than to do that right now. Especially seeing how many whiskeys he had had in the last few minutes, and not knowing the numbers he had before she arrived, Karen knew better than to have that conversation right now. Instead, she swallows, grabs her glass of wine and takes a sip.
Spencer drains the rest of the glass, putting it down on the table and signaling to Joe for another. It would only be number four, and it would be his last. “So,” He says, “How was your day? Better than mine, I’m guessing. What other cases did you have?”
