A QUICK PEEK THROUGH AN OLD SHADE por Okinawa Soba (Rob) Por Flickr: Another gem from a rarely-looked-at archive of old photographic proof-prints of Japan. It's a pleasing image in both 2-D and 3-D. The above image is a "Soba Made" mock-up from an old, un-mounted, stereoview proof-print that has never been published before. And yes, I personally took the photo of the above photo using my own camera. Explanation below... * The above 3-D image is a close, cropped out portion of a larger shot that allows you to see over the top of the prop. Besides the slightly distracting "retinal rivalry" that occurs in the studio background between their two, posed faces, the proof-print had other exposure and / or development problems. The image was never published, and you might be seeing it here for the first time. Ms. LEIGH GLEASON, Curator of the CMP Archives, would like you to know that, including images of Japan, they have several hundred thousand more world-wide, original old negatives and proof-prints here, all from the world's great 19th and early-20th-Century stereoview publishers. That's right. This vast archive of old 3-D glass-plate negatives and images is still preserved for researchers, publishers, and anyone wanting or needing a fresh, new print pulled from the original negative ! Got a crummy, beat up, curved-mount stereoview whose content is great, but is so bad you can't reproduce it ? No problem. IT'S PROBABLY RIGHT HERE in the CMP ! Got a great condition, old curved-mount stereoview, but you want or need to see more of the image that was cut off in the trim-and-mounting process ? No problem. THE ORIGINAL 5x7-inch negative is PROBABLY RIGHT HERE in the CMP ! Want a mountain of amazing "lost" and un-published 19th-Century views depicting some country you are writing a book about ? No problem ! The MOTHER LODE of ALL CLASSIC 3-D IMAGERY is waiting for you RIGHT HERE at the CMP ! From amongst hundreds-of-thousands of old and original glass negatives, you can derive 3-D or [half-stereo] 2-D to fit the format of your book... or poster, exhibition print, greeting card, coffee mug, wrapping paper, POP advertising, or even the aspect ratio of the TV Show, Motion Picture, or Documentary that you need a certain still photo for graphic insertion. I would like to thank Ms. LEIGH GLEASON for her help in letting me see and access just a fraction of of the CMP's collections during the short three days I spent there in 2009. Her knowledge was vast, and she was extremely busy "running the show". Yet, she took the time to pull out many boxes of photos to help me in my quest to see the only surviving negatives made by Japanese photographer T. ENAMI, compare the original negatives of many famous Western photographers who shot 3-D in Japan, and allow me, under her supervision, to use my own hand-held camera to make many rough "copy images" for further study once I got back to Okinawa. I truly recommend the CALIFORNIA MUSEUM of PHOTOGRAPHY to all of my Flickr Friends who not only love taking pictures NOW, but who love collecting, caring for, and preserving the great images of those who came before us. Cheers ! The CMP : www.flickr.com/photos/okinawa-soba/albums/72157644819895822 CREDIT : Keystone-Mast Collection, UCR/California Museum of Photography, University of California at Riverside.
