Reddit is a deeply unserious place to me because I can post "My music box keeps going off and I know there's a rational explanation and don't believe it's a ghost, it's just freaking me out," and there are goobers in the comments demanding a video or "it didn't happen." Number one, this is a thing all music boxes can do, especially older ones. And number two, to get a video would require re-entering the room the music box is currently in. And I'm not going back in there.
I am watching creepy videos at three in the morning and my deceased grandmother's heirloom jewellery/music box keeps randomly going off, which I know is simply due to a structural quirk where vibrations, weather, and temperature can cause the mechanisms of the music box to shift in a way that causes it to play a bit. I know it is not a ghost, but rather just a kind of physical glitch and has absolutely nothing to do with the videos and everything to do with recent weather. With this rational explanation in mind, I am doing what any rational, logical adult man would do in this situation-
I am hiding downstairs until it stops because it's freaking me out.

“Do creatures of the dark live among us? Sam and Niko set their sights on the internet's creepiest videos and determine whether visual effects were involved.“
Debunking is a necessary part of being a paranormal investigator as well as being a sensitive. Debunking is the least exciting part of the ‘job’ and can involve hours and hours of reviewing evidence and testing possible theories. Sometimes a reasonable explanation can be a relief, satisfying, and can even help protect you from potentially hazardous situations.
How you debunk depends on the situation, and every situation should be considered unique. For example, if you’re a sensitive you don’t exactly debunk situations the same way a paranormal research team would.
Be optimistic (if you’re wanting to find the paranormal that is) yet skeptical. This means you can believe in the paranormal and hauntings, but know that not every ghost story has a true paranormal cause. Don’t go in trying to prove the paranormal, go in trying to disprove it.
These are simply the bare-basics of debunking, and as mentioned no case is really ‘typical’.
Weird Feelings
Electrical sources in the home can help debunk feelings like paranoia, feeling ill, headaches, and even hallucinations. Electronics in the home give off waves of radiation which are called Electromagnetic Fields or EMF. Long term high EMF can cause medical issues as well, so it’s important to check your appliances and any power sources in your home on a regular basis, whether or not you have paranormal experiences.
Common sources of EMF
Electric Blankets
Refrigerators
Microwaves
Computers
Cell Phone Chargers
Doors Closing & Opening On Their Own
How heavy is the door? Does it swing easily or is it a heavy door? Is it off balance, where if left open gravity could cause the door to close or vise versa? If there are wood floors, take into consideration changes in humidity and even shifting foundations. Keep in mind drafts, often one door closes and one literally opens; this happens often in older homes. If you’re unable to recreate the door moving on it’s own by checking all these things, it’s possible something paranormal is occurring.
Voices, Sounds, Knocks, etc.
Is it being consistently? When do you hear it? Are the bangs in a certain room occurring when the weather is stormy or windy? Have you checked for trees outside? When you hear talking while you’re alone in one room, is anyone else in the house?
Vents Could the vents be allowing the sound to travel and possibly destroy (particularly in apartments)?
Appliances When something turns on or off does it create some scary sounds that might be traveling through the walls to the other end of the house, which could further distort the sound? For example air conditioners and heaters can make thudding sounds and what can seem like growls.
Listen Closely Sometimes you hear a brief noise that sounds like someone saying a partial or whole word. Turn off nearby electronics and listen more closely; Is someone home? As someone who (clearly) deals with the paranormal on a regular basis, I often hear someone speak and then try to track it down. It can also help to sort of ask questions like “if there is someone present let yourself be known”, things along those lines.
Further Debunking Most people don't have multiple audio recorders, I even don’t. But one useful method of debunking these sounds (if the other debunking methods don’t provide helpful) is setting up audio recorders in various rooms, that way you can determine what’s been captured and where.
Smells
Wood has pores and can absorb and trap such odors as cigar/cigarette smoke and urine. As the temperature gets warmer these pores will open up and release these scents. One way to debunk smells like this are to take a hair dryer and move throughout your home in several rooms and heat up things like the trim, wood floor or carpet (though a thorough cleaning is best), and even kitchen table to see if the smells can be recreated.
Rotten Smells (other than rotten egg/sulfur) Check your trash, maybe something in there has your house smelling. During winter time it’s also not uncommon for mice to find their way into your home and crawl into your heating system, if it seems like this rotten smell occurs when the furnace kicks on, this is a strong possibility.
WARNING Sulfur (rotten egg) smells are often associated with demonic cases, but as I mentioned in the Demon or Ghost post, always debunk. Your safety is important, and you don’t want to end up part of the Spirit world long before your time just because you’re chasing ‘ghosts’.
Potential common causes of a rotten egg odor:
A gas leak in your home - READ.
A sewer leak outside of your home.
Seeing Shadow People
The most commonly seen, but are they really there? Is it always seen at the same place? Is it always the same height or does it differ? Is it during the day when sun is shining through a particular window? If you live on a busy road, could it be headlights? Even the moon can have change the lighting and can cast shadows which can appear human. Even debunk yourself! Sometimes it’s your own movement that causes a shadow figure, move around to check this. Move boxes, chairs, anything else that could cause this.
The best way to debunk or prove that there’s really a shadow person? Set up a video recorder while keeping a log of what you see. Using the previous method mixed with a recording method seems to give true results.
Chills
Broken thermostats happen. Do you have allergies? Commonly ‘hot flashes’ as well as chills are common with severe seasonal allergies. Have you been sick? Are you eating enough? Chills can be caused by starvation (such as anorexia, etc). Anemia, etc. Chills are fairly easy to debunk if you know what you’re looking for.
Conclusion
These are just examples of how to debunk paranormal experiences. Every experience is different. Be creative! I’ll try to keep note of my debunking methods and write another piece on those as well.
