May 4, 2020 - Spotted Pardalote (Pardalotus punctatus)

These pardalotes are found in eucalyptus forests, as well as parks and gardens with eucalyptus trees, in eastern and southern Australia. They feed on insects and sugary substances produced by leaves and insects, foraging among the leaves of trees. Pairs nest in lined chambers dug into earth banks, or sometimes in tree hollows or other cavities. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the chicks.

I posted this little fellow way back I’m pretty sure, but he’s so handsome, worth another go.  From 2012.  A dead spotted pardalote (Pardalotus punctatus) on the back lawn. (I’d always called then firetails, but I’m wrong).  We only ever get the briefest glimpses of these as they flit from sheltered spot to sheltered spot avoiding the aggressive noisy miners.

Another linocut: Spotted Pardalote! When I was in Australia I accidentally held a nest cavity hostage when I sat in front of it to eat my lunch. The owner of the cavity was none too pleased with me.
