The Veils @ La Maroquinerie 29/10/16

La Maroquinerie makes no sense. For those who have not been there, it is a small cavernous room set like an amphitheatre. At the bottom before the stage there is floor space, which any sane person would expect to be the part of the venue with the most people packed into it. It never is. It is always half empty while people cram on the progressively raised platforms encircling the pit. It is completely ridiculous. For otherwise one of the best venues in Paris, this is a serious problem. It just never feels like the people there really want to see the band. 

It was a night of incomprehension. The Veils did not make much sense either. If you had walked in with your eyes closed and kept them that way for the duration of the gig, it would have been easy to walk out thinking you had witnessed the second coming of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. But watching the band was an entirely different story. From song one lead singer Finn Andrews looked as though he was about to burst into tears. Nothing in his consistently strained expression evoked anything like enjoyment. It was as though being on stage was hurting every fibre in his body.   

This was in stark contrast to the rest of the band who, for the exception of smiling bassist Sophia Burn, looked like hired hands keen to play their parts and be finished as soon as possible. Lead guitarist Daniel Raishbrook was particularly forlorn, practically immobile for the duration of the set apart from, assumedly, his fingers. 

The Veils are the Finn Andrews show. Unfortunately, what is captivating about it is how off-putting the front man really is. Before continuing, however, it must be said that he is a good singer with a voice that, if you kept your eyes closed, would cut through the drone in the desired evocative way. But for some reason at the end of almost every line he sees fit to add what can only be described as his attempt to produce the effect of delay using only his own mouth. It is kind of like he is trying for a vibrato effect but, instead, just repeats the final syllable of the final words of each line. 

The band smashed through a set of songs from their latest album, Total Depravity. Finn Andrews came out alone for the encore and asked the crowd which of his earlier songs they would like to hear. A group had been screaming for “The Leavers Dance” all night. He admitted, in probably the only endearing moment of the night, that he had written that song at 16 and, apparently his voice having broken since, was no longer able to sing it. Instead he played his 14 year old self’s, “first attempt at a love song”, “Livinia”, in which his acoustic delay got to such levels of ridiculousness that some sections of the crowd couldn’t help but laugh. 

The rest of the band came back out to play “Jesus for the Jugular” and then finally the discomfort was over. It was really weird. And a real shame because other than the band’s bizarre stage presence they seem pretty good. Maybe best to just listen to the Veils at home.
